Role Overview



We're recruiting an experienced

Nursery Chef

who will prepare fresh, nutritious meals and snacks for our children, in line with Scotland's

Setting the Table

nutritional standards and current food safety legislation. You'll play a vital role in promoting healthy eating habits and contributing to children's overall wellbeing.

Key ResponsibilitiesNutrition & Meal Preparation



Prepare, cook, and serve

healthy, balanced meals and snacks

appropriate to children's ages (0-5 years). Plan and develop menus that reflect

'Setting the Table' nutritional guidance

, taking into account cultural and dietary needs, allergies, and preferences. Work with the nursery management team and parents to discuss menu choices and encourage positive eating habits. Ensure portion sizes and food textures support developmental stages (weaning to confident self-feeding).

Food Safety & Hygiene



Maintain

high standards of kitchen hygiene and food safety

, following Environmental Health and Food Standards Scotland expectations. Adhere to legal requirements for safe food handling, storage, temperature logging, and risk of cross-contamination. Ensure accurate records of cleaning schedules, food temperatures, and allergy/dietary information.

Health & Safety



Comply with workplace

Health & Safety at Work regulations

and nursery policies to maintain a safe kitchen environment at all times. Report any hazards, equipment faults, or incidents promptly to management. Participate in emergency procedures (e.g., fire drills) and know evacuation plans.

Teamwork & Communication



Collaborate with nursery staff to ensure mealtimes are positive, inclusive experiences contributing to children's learning and routines. Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding children's food preferences, allergies, or concerns. Support staff in maintaining accurate dietary records and ensure allergy management systems are followed.

Additional Duties



Support nursery events as required (e.g., themed lunches, parent evenings). Maintain stock levels, place orders, and manage supplies within budget. Contribute to continuous improvement of kitchen practices and menu development.

What We're Looking For



Previous experience in catering/kitchen roles;

nursery or early years experience desirable

Food Hygiene qualification

(Level 2 or above) or equivalent. Knowledge of

Setting the Table

and confidence in planning nutritious meals for young children. Excellent communication, organisation, and time-management skills. Child-centred, professional, and supportive team player.

Pay: From 12.60 per hour

Expected hours: 30 - 38 per week
