Hours: Monday-Friday 10.30am to 12.30pm (2 hours a day, 10 hours a week)

Job Purpose
To provide healthy, nutritious, and balanced meals and snacks for children in line with Setting the Table: Nutritional Guidance and Food Standards for Early Years Childcare Providers in Scotland, while maintaining the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and allergen management.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Cooking
Prepare meals on schedule, ensuring smooth service in line with nursery routines.
Minimise food waste through effective portion control and stock management.
Present food attractively to encourage children's enjoyment of meals.
Food Safety & Hygiene
Comply with Food Standards Scotland and local authority Environmental Health requirements.
Follow HACCP procedures and maintain accurate records of food temperatures, cleaning schedules, and stock rotation.
Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment at all times.
Store food safely, ensuring correct use-by dates and labelling.
Allergen & Special Dietary Needs
Ensure accurate preparation and serving of meals for children with allergies and dietary needs.
Work closely with nursery staff and management to stay up to date with children's dietary requirements.
Clearly label all food items to prevent cross-contamination.
Health & Safety
Follow COSHH and nursery health and safety policies.
Safely operate kitchen equipment and report any hazards or maintenance issues.
Administration & Stock Control
Prepare food order list on a weekly basis
Rotate stock and monitor usage to reduce waste and ensure freshness.
Teamwork & Communication
Liaise with nursery staff to coordinate mealtimes and ensure smooth delivery of meals.
Communicate effectively with staff and management regarding children's dietary needs.
Contribute to a positive nursery environment and support staff in promoting a healthy food culture.
Be flexible in your role and approachable to ensure tasks are complete.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2 minimum).
COSHH training (can be provided)
HACCP training (can be provided)
Experience of catering in a professional kitchen (preferably in early years, schools, or care settings).
Knowledge of nutrition, food temperatures and portion sizes for children.
Understanding of allergen management and special dietary requirements.
Desirable:
Level 3 in Food Hygiene (training can be provided)
Experience working in a nursery or childcare environment.
Knowledge of Setting the Table (Scottish nutritional guidance).
First Aid or Allergen Awareness training.
Personal Qualities
Passion for preparing healthy, child-friendly meals.
Reliable, organized, tidy, and able to manage time effectively.
Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the nursery.
Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.

Additional Information
Employment is subject to satisfactory PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme membership. This is payable by the employee. (When the successful candidate has completed their 3 month trial period and starts their permanent post, this will be reimbursed by employer)
Ongoing training will be provided in food hygiene, nutrition, and health & safety to keep knowledge current and in line with best practice.
