Job Purpose:

The Nursery Housekeeper/Cleaner is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety within the nursery setting. This role ensures that all areas, including playrooms, communal spaces, kitchen, and bathrooms, are clean, tidy, and safe for children, staff, and visitors. The post holder contributes to a welcoming and safe environment that supports children's health, wellbeing, and learning.

Key Responsibilities Cleaning & Hygiene

Work alongside other staff to carry out daily cleaning duties in accordance with nursery policies, including classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, kitchen, and outdoor areas. Ensure toys, equipment and furniture are cleaned regularly. Maintain cleaning supplies and report when items need reordering. Deep-clean nursery areas periodically, following schedules and health & safety guidance.

Health & Safety

Ensure all cleaning activities comply with health and safety regulations and nursery policies. Report any maintenance issues, hazards, or safety concerns to management promptly. Assist in infection control procedures, cleaning of surfaces and touch points during outbreaks.

Supporting the Nursery Team

Work closely with nursery staff to ensure cleaning does not disrupt children's routines or activities. Support general nursery organisation, e.g., tidying. Assist in maintaining a welcoming and organised environment for children, staff and parents.

Person Specification Essential

Previous cleaning or housekeeping experience, ideally in a childcare, educational, or similar setting. Understanding of hygiene and infection control standards. Reliable, punctual, and trustworthy. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication skills to liaise with nursery staff and management. Physically able to perform cleaning tasks, including bending, lifting, and moving furniture.

Desirable

Experience working in a nursery or childcare setting. Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations in childcare environments. Awareness of COSHH and safe handling of cleaning chemicals.

Working Conditions

Work will be carried out indoors and outdoors in all nursery areas. The role involves manual handling, including moving furniture and equipment. Cleaning tasks will take place between 5-7pm to support hygiene standards.
