About us

------------

UCL is one of the UK's premier universities and is regularly ranked in the world's top 10. It is a world-class research and teaching institution based in central London whose staff and former students have included 20 Nobel Prize winners. Founded in 1826, it was the only university in England at that time which admitted students regardless of race or religion. UCL was also the first to admit women on equal terms with men. Today, UCL is an inspiring university in which to work and study and it continues to thrive on the diversity and creativity of its community.

The UCL Faculty of Engineering is the largest of its kind in the UK, ranked as the second most impactful engineering faculty in Europe and first for Research Strength in the Research Excellence Framework. The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering departments in the UK. The Department is proud to host internationally-leading research groups covering a broad range of activities and spread over several sites. Our focus is on excellent academic research in identifying new technologies and methods for diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and the development of implanted devices.

The UCL Hawkes Institute is a multi-disciplinary research grouping at the intersection of UCL's engineering and health activities that focuses on advancing healthcare technology. The institute capitalises on UCL's unique combination of research excellence in computational, engineering and medical sciences. Its formation brings together UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) and Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) to maximise the synergy between these two existing centres of excellence.

The OASIS Hub is an EPSRC-funded programme led by UCL, working closely with the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, that aims to develop new low-cost, portable devices to identify and visualise cancer using optical, acoustic and photoacoustic imaging. The hub brings together partners from across academia, industry and the NHS to accelerate the development and clinical use of these technologies. It will pave the way for clinical trials and establish new datasets with the aim of making effective and less invasive interventions available to everyone in the UK.
