The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) plays a vital role in supporting the Occupational Health Manager (OHM) and Senior Nurse (OSN) in delivering a high-quality, professional Occupational Health Service across British Steel.
The OHN is responsible for implementing established policies, procedures, and health programs across all areas of Occupational Health. This includes conducting medical assessments, coordinating referrals to physicians and allied health professionals, maintaining effective communication with managers, and ensuring accurate and secure data collection and storage. The OHN also provides emergency medical care when required and adheres to the standards and code of conduct set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), maintaining an up-to-date professional registration (PIN).
The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for delivering agreed health policies and programs, including fitness-for-work assessments, pre-employment screening, health surveillance, and safety-critical evaluations. They promote health initiatives, conduct audits, and collect relevant data to support service effectiveness.
Maintaining up-to-date clinical skills and complying with NMC standards is essential, including keeping professional registration current. The nurse provides scheduled services to employees and contractors, manages cases of sickness absence to support timely return-to-work plans, and treats workplace injuries with appropriate referrals.
Additional duties include conducting site visits to promote wellbeing, supporting mental health awareness and suicide prevention, and helping employees with medical conditions remain at work safely. Collaboration with support staff ensures smooth operations, while accurate reporting and communication with the OHM help inform health strategies.
The nurse also oversees the safety and maintenance of medical equipment and facilities, manages supplies, and ensures compliance with GDPR in handling medical records. Effective communication of health outcomes and coordination with other professionals and managers is key to delivering a high-quality Occupational Health service.
