Job Description

Oliver McGowan co-trainer, expert with lived experience of Autism and/or Learning Disabilities

Job summary:

We have an exciting opportunity for someone who has lived experience of Learning Disabilities, Autism or both to support our team of trainers delivering the Oliver McGowan mandatory training. You will be co-delivering the training with other trainers either face to face or online. The training is to help staff have a better understanding of Learning Disabilities and Autism, how to talk to a person with Autism or a person with a Learning Disability and what changes may need to be made to help and support people.

Key responsibilities as a Trainer:

Deliver the Oliver McGowan training in person or online across Tier 1 and Tier 2. Some sessions will be held in a room with a group of people, and others will be held over video calls (like Teams). You will be asked to share your personal experiences with the group. You will be asked to talk about your life as an autistic person or someone with a Learning Disability. This helps people understand things from your point of view. You will be working with other trainers as part of a team; you will never have to work alone and there will always be at least one Trainer alongside you. You will be answering questions that you feel comfortable sharing with the group. You will need to arrive on time for the training sessions, so everything runs smoothly.

You must be diagnosed with Autism or have a Learning Disability.

You also need to be able to:

Be prepared to undertake training to become a trainer for Oliver McGowan Training. This will be a 2 day session. Speak confidently in front of a group, so others can understand your experiences. Understand others and answer their questions. Use a computer to join meetings on Microsoft Teams or other platforms being used. Travel to our training rooms where the training is being held, as you will need to be in person. Be prepared and organised. You should be ready for your sessions and keep your work in order.
The training is delivered on a Wednesday every other week based in Taunton, with the Learning Disability session taking place in the morning and the Autism session in the afternoon. The sessions are approximately 3 hours long with your part lasting approximately 1 hour. We currently deliver Tier 2 training in person with the aim to deliver Tier 1 training in the near future which will take place via Teams.
