About the Role



We are seeking an experienced

Operations Director

with a strong background in

civil and electrical contracting

ideally gained within the

water, gas, energy, or wider utilities sectors

to lead and oversee the successful delivery of multiple construction projects.


You will be responsible for the end-to-end operational performance of the contracting division, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.


This is a senior leadership role that combines

strategic oversight

,

commercial accountability

, and

hands-on operational management

of Project Managers and delivery teams across a portfolio of works.

Key Responsibilities



Lead, manage, and develop Project Managers overseeing multiple construction and infrastructure projects. Ensure projects are delivered to specification, on time, within budget, and aligned with safety, environmental, and quality standards. Oversee resource planning, scheduling, and allocation of labour, materials, and subcontractors. Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement across all delivery functions. Maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies. Provide commercial oversight of contracts, including cost control, risk management, and financial performance. Lead regular project reviews, ensuring proactive identification and resolution of risks or delays. Oversee compliance with all health, safety, and environmental legislation and company policies. Contribute to strategic business planning, growth initiatives, and tender support for new work. Support and mentor PMs and delivery teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and operational discipline.

Experience and Qualifications



Essential:



Proven experience as an

Operations Director

,

Senior Project Manager

, or

Programme Manager

within civil, electrical, or utilities contracting. Strong knowledge of construction delivery within the

water, gas, or energy infrastructure

sectors. Demonstrable track record of managing large-scale or multi-site projects through teams of PMs and site-based delivery staff. Excellent commercial awareness and understanding of NEC or similar contract frameworks. Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills. Comprehensive understanding of health, safety, quality, and environmental standards within construction operations.

Desirable:



Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management. Chartered status (CEng, MICE, or equivalent) desirable. Experience with digital project management or reporting tools. Experience working within a regulated utilities environment (e.g. water frameworks, DNOs).
