Operations Manager

Gorebridge, SCT, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Borthwick Castle is one of Scotland's most iconic and exclusive-use venues. A stunning 15th-century stronghold nestled just outside Edinburgh with a rich history, a reputation for impeccable service, and a close-knit team of passionate professionals, we deliver unforgettable events, luxury stays, and fairytale weddings in a setting that feels like a home as much as a castle.

We are currently seeking a dynamic, hands-on Operations Manager to join our leadership team. This role is perfect for someone with strong hospitality roots, proven management experience, and a flair for delivering exceptional guest experiences.

The Role

A rarely available position in our management team has become available to join.

As Operations manager, you will be responsible for the smooth day to day running of the castle. From coordinating departments to maintaining service standards, managing a small team and responding to the needs of high end clients, you will be the operational heartbeat of the venue.

This role is extremely beneficial in hospitality terms, giving an excellent balance of work/life and offering unique flexibility within the industry. We average 1 event per week over a year which would require longer hours (generally on a Friday/Saturday). All other shifts are flexible, and are usually day shift. You will be directly leading a small permanent team and a wider pool of part-time event staff. You will lead the operational delivery of weddings, private events, and residential stays. Maintaining high standards of cleanliness, service and guest care. During event days this role is hands on, leading from the front and being one of the faces of our experience. Our current reviews show how important this is to us. Manage rotas, logistics and casual staff recruitment strategy to support annual business in a sustainable manner. Champion a positive, professional team culture rooted in support and accountability. Deliver communications effectively with other departments with regards to client stays to deliver smooth and seamless operation. Ensure staff training and qualifications meet Borthwick standards. Implement brand standards and capability training for new staff. Hold periodic training sessions for current staff. Review operational Health and safety folder to be comprehensive and well presented. This will include all legal compliances applicable. Work with Director to ensure that full compliances are met along a range of safety standards. Stock control and ordering for wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks, tea, coffee and any event specific requirements.

What we're Looking For

Strong experience in the hospitality industry, ideally within an exclusive use venue or private setting. Previous leadership experience and the confidence to guide and develop a relatively junior team. A Calm, composed approach to pressure and change, especially when dealing with unexpected client needs. A positive, emotionally intelligent style of communication. Excellent problem solving, time management and people skills. A willingness to "muck in" and lead by example.

Benefits

Inclusion in annual profit share scheme. This discretionary scheme benefits colleagues every year if the company makes profit. We have now issued substantial bonuses over the last 4 years.

Attractive mixture of shifts due to business nature. During non-event days, dayshift is the most common. Work from home on non event days is available.

Time in lieu for any weeks worked more than 40 hours.

Annual Uniform allowance

Positive working environment

Enhanced Maternity/Paternity scheme

Holiday buy back scheme
