The Role



The Operations & Site Manager is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of the business while placing strong emphasis on

people management, team engagement, and performance

.

You will lead a diverse on-site team, creating a positive, well-structured working environment where people are supported, trained, and motivated to deliver high standards across all areas of the business -- from auction operations and customer service to site management and the on-site cafe.

This role is ideal for a confident people manager who enjoys being visible, hands-on, and actively involved in guiding teams through busy operational periods.

Key Responsibilities



People Leadership & Team Development



Lead, manage, and motivate a multidisciplinary team including auction assistants, porters, customer service staff, and cafe staff Create a positive team culture built on accountability, collaboration, and high standards Recruit, induct, train, and develop staff, ensuring individuals clearly understand their roles and expectations Conduct regular check-ins, performance reviews, and coaching conversations Manage staff rotas, workload planning, and resourcing for auction days and peak periods Act as a first point of contact for day-to-day people matters, resolving issues fairly and professionally

Operational & Site Management



Oversee the smooth day-to-day operation of the auction house and wider site Implement and maintain clear standard operating procedures to support consistency and efficiency Coordinate auction preparation, including logistics, displays, and room setup Oversee inventory handling, storage, and security of high-value items Ensure excellent customer experiences for buyers, sellers, and visitors Manage the on-site cafe, ensuring strong service standards, hygiene compliance, and team performance

Compliance, Safety & Performance



Ensure health and safety compliance across the site, leading risk assessments and promoting safe working practices Oversee site maintenance, security, and general upkeep Support senior management with budget monitoring and operational planning Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance systems, workflows, and team effectiveness

Skills & Experience



Proven experience in

people management

, operations, or site leadership Confident leader with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop teams Strong communication and interpersonal skills Organised, proactive, and comfortable managing competing priorities Customer-focused mindset with high attention to detail Knowledge of auctions, art, antiques, or collectibles is desirable but not essential Understanding of health & safety and operational best practice Flexibility to work weekends and auction days when required
