The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of transport services by optimising resources and fostering effective collaboration across the operation. You will oversee the day-to-day activities of drivers and the wider transport team, ensuring all customer requirements are met promptly, safely, and to a high standard. A strong understanding of driver hours, tachograph regulations, the Working Time Directive, and health & safety compliance is essential.
This is a full-time position, with working hours from
Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 18:00, and at least one (1) Saturday per month. subject to business requirements.
The role holder will be responsible for the on call phone, from 18:00 to facilitate any driver issues.
Key responsibilities:
1. Operations
a. Organise the effective use of the available resources, vehicles and people to meet operational targets as required, as agreed with customers.
b. Ensuring all deliveries are covered daily and exceeding the customer service expected by the customer(s)
c. Ensure all goods are handled in the correct manner to minimise damage and follow manual handling techniques to prevent injury and harm.
d. Resolving any issues or concerns that may impact customer delivery in a timely and appropriate manner.
e. Carry out any other reasonable requests to support the effective running of the Transport operation, including HR and HS&E tasks, and/or External Customer visits.
f. Have good geographical knowledge of East Sussex and Kent.
2. Team Leadership
a. Ensure all team members are aware of key business outcomes, processes, and expectations. Deliver all company communications consistently and in a timely manner, providing feedback as appropriate.
b. Promoting and supporting employee engagement activities, ensuring tangible outcomes are identified, implemented and measured.
c. Ensuring due attention is provided to employee welfare, identifying and signposting areas of support where necessary, and ensuring functional arrangements are in place to protect the well-being of all employees.
e. Ensure that all company procedures are managed consistently and fairly, including, but not exclusively, holidays, absences, performance, and disciplinary.
f. Supporting with business investigations, disciplinary and grievance processes across the organisation, as necessary.
g. Oversee employee relations procedures such as holiday authorisations to ensure sufficient employees are available to meet operational demands, raising on time where additional staff are required either temporarily or permanently.
h. Ensuring sufficient inventory coverage is available during site operational hours, with staff trained accordingly.
3. Communication & Company Procedures
a. Ensure any concerns, issues, or variances to instructions are immediately communicated to the team and, when relevant, appropriate action is taken as soon as possible.
b. Representing the company or daily, weekly and quarterly reviews and providing the General Manager with regular updates
c. Ensure all Company procedures are adhered to, including HR procedures, standards of behaviour, supporting with investigations and disciplinary hearings, as necessary.
e. Ensure that the driver's WTD is monitored, Tachograph infringements and vehicle compliance are maintained to the company's policy
4. Vehicle Compliance
5. Ensure all relevant HGV vehicle checks are carried out alongside ensuring vehicle PMI & MOT schedules are arranged and completed to make sure a safe working environment is always maintained for both depots
a. Ensuring drivers receive appropriate training to ensure driving standards are achieved and maintained. Arranging annual refresher assessments for driver base.
b. Work with central functions to maintain accurate training information and records.
6. Health and Safety
a. Deliver the ongoing H&S programme through daily monitoring, application and delivery of the H&S policy,
b. Participating in H&S monitoring, reviewing processes and ensuring employees are trained.
c. Communication of H&S matters to the team and managing workplace safety continuously.
d. Induction of new employees
Key Skills and Requirements
CPC Qualification (National/International)
Previous experience in a supervisory or team-leading role within a transport or logistics environment.
A good understanding of transport regulations and fleet management.
Good Understanding of pallet network distribution
Proven experience in transport management, with responsibility for overseeing a medium-sized distribution network, is essential
Good attention to detail and organisational skills.
Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written.
Excellent IT skills including Microsoft packages and e-mail.
Ability to prioritise workload, effectively managing multiple tasks.
Proven ability to work effectively within a team, manage competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines
LGV licence an advantage, but not essential
