Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for two Operator (Substation Fitter's) based in Birmingham.


As an Operator you will assist a Craftsperson with general site work associated with the repair, maintenance and construction of plant and switchgear up to 66kV.


You will be responsible for carrying out substation inspections and to support the craftsperson with the repair and maintenance of high voltage plant & switchgear.


The work involves being away from the depot, either lone working when undertaking substation inspections or working in a team of two people.


To apply, you will need to hold English & Maths GCSE (1-9/G-A*) or equivalent qualification deemed to be at the same level in these subjects, such as Functional Skills.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

The Ideal Candidate

You will need to be flexible in your approach to assist the team in meeting its objectives. This role is suitable for someone who enjoys the demands of a physical outdoor environment.


Some electrical experience would be an advantage, however full training will be given.


Safety awareness is a must (you'll follow safety instructions, use protective equipment and wear protective clothing), the environment requires you to be able to react quickly, decisively and responsibly.


You will need to be mobile throughout the area and you may also be required to undertake out of hours standby duties, therefore a full driving license is required.


Potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit 135kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.
