Job Description


This is a full time, clinical post, based at King\'s College Hospital\'s Queen Mary\'s Hospital, Sidcup (QMS) site, though potentially at any of King\'s sites as appropriate. The individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Main duties of the job

The main remit of this post is to provide specialist Consultant leadership, expertise and support to the medical retina services provided at King\'s College Hospital. The post holder will develop and provide comprehensive medical retina services, mainly dealing with diabetic retinopathy, ARMD and vein occlusions but also less common retinal problems and potentially uveitis. They will oversee the fast track service for AMD and the anti-VEGF service. There will be commitment to developing community based medical retina services for patients with stable retinal disease, with involvement in training, supervision and virtual case review. In addition the post may involve performing high volume cataract surgery.

The post holder will contribute to the strategic development of the medical retina service across all King\'s sites in collaboration with the other King\'s medical retina specialists and there are regular meetings of a cross-site subspecialty medical retina group to facilitate this.

The post will be based at the DH and QMS sites of King\'s College Hospital and the proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 10 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. The On-Call commitment is classed as Category B.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Together with the other Ophthalmologists, to provide a service for Ophthalmology patients across all sites. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

2. Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.

6. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R& D framework.

7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/ Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.

9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).

10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.

11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.

12. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

13. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

14. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent
  • CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date)
Desirable
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MS, MD or PhD)
  • Management course and/or qualification
Experience
Essential
  • Wide experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology
  • Advanced subspecialty training in medical retina
  • Experience in day to day organisation of Ophthalmic services in a busy Teaching Hospital
Skills
Essential
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
Desirable
  • Competence in performing high volume and complex cataract surgery
