Job Description

JOB SUMMARY



The post holder will be an experienced ophthalmic nurse, with outstanding working knowledge of the running of ophthalmic theatres and ophthalmic outpatient clinics. They will be used to organising high volume patient flow in a safe and effective manner, ensuring efficient patient assessment and treatment. They will have a good working knowledge of ophthalmic medications and their installation

To provide professional and clinical Supervision for the team which includes ophthalmic technicians and registered nurses To support the Head of Clinical Services, Theatre Lead, Outpatient Lead and Executive Director in developing and implementing a strategic development plan for the team and service, reviewing and challenging current practice to do "things" differently To act as a resource for education and development within the service To ensure the effective Supervision of registered Ophthalmic nurses and ophthalmic technicians To provide specialist autonomous nursing care for patients within speciality. To administer medication to patients

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Management



To lead and act as a supervisory role model in relation to ophthalmology services for the team and wider multi professional team To develop strong relationships with key stakeholders for the ophthalmology service to include but not be limited to; consultants, optometrists, theatre lead and external companies. To develop and facilitate a culture of fair, equitable, consistent and supportive supervision within the team To assist in the development and implementation of an effective recruitment and retention strategy for the ophthalmology team

Professional/Clinical



To be accountable for his/her own practice and utilise available opportunities to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence. To lead the team by actively managing and participating in patient care ensuring standards are met and maintained. To provide advanced level, autonomous nursing care to patients within speciality. To maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with NMC, Medicana and medico-legal requirements, ensuring these standards are met and maintained within the team To act as a patient advocate when appropriate, ensuring respect for patient confidentiality, privacy and cultural/ethnic background, ensuring that these standards are met and maintained within the team To assist, support and participate in the development of nurse led services as appropriate within speciality To be a credible and approachable role model for staff by providing clinical support and guidance as required To engage in local and national forums to develop practice and raise the profile of the service and Medicana. In conjunction with senior nurses, develop clinical policies and protocols relevant to the area, ensuring that practice is evidence based To ensure the effective and efficient use of patient resources

Quality



To, have an overall view of the workload and the experience of the staff and act to utilise the department's establishment to ensure adequate cover to achieve a high standard of care and safe and effective patient flow. To facilitate high quality, cost effective care through the use of audit, benchmarking, observations of care and other quality initiatives as determined by Medicana, ensure that the staff receive feedback on the results, and action is taken to improve standards To attend, represent and participate in multi professional meetings. To be fully aware of the targets and health agendas set by the organisation, and implement required actions to meet these targets To identify and monitor any risk to patient or staff safety taking appropriate management action. To support the risk management: documenting adverse incidents via the organisations electronic system, supporting an investigation process, with feedback to individuals and learning for the team To support the complaints process, intervening at an early to resolve informally where possible and action any identified outcomes To Assist, support and participate in nursing clinical audit to support, maintain and develop expected standards of care To Assist, support and participate in the development and implementation of assessment and mentorship processes for new staff to ensure quality standards are met and support competency completion

Education



To contribute to an assessment of own educational needs, developing and agreeing a professional development plan with the line manager To keep up to date with clinical and nursing developments as required to meet the Revalidation standards of the NMC To maintain links with affiliated educational organisations and ensure that there is an appropriate learning environment for students and trainees

Infection Control Statement



The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:



1. To ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.

2. To notify the Executive Director or the Lead in charge (in Absence of Director), as soon as possible of your inability to report for duty.

3. To adhere to all Company policies and procedures within the defined timescales.

4. To complete and adhere to all Mandatory Training requirements including the management of health and safety, risk management and adverse incidents.

5. To maintain a professional appearance and manner at all times.

6. Partake in the appraisal scheme and to ensure that objectives are supported and met within available resources.

7. To maintain accurate departmental records and ensure conformance to the Data Protection Act, Caldicott Principles and Code of Conduct to ensure that appropriate security measures are in operation at all times.

Pay: 47,000.00 per year
