To contribute to the maintenance, improvement and development of Cullompton Town Council's public realm, open spaces, play areas and cemetery, and to support the delivery of town-wide improvement projects, events and larger capital works. The role plays a key part in maintaining high standards of town presentation, civic pride and public safety, ensuring that Cullompton remains an attractive, welcoming and well-maintained place for residents and visitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Grounds, Open Spaces and Play Areas
Carry out routine grounds maintenance including grass cutting, strimming, hedge cutting, weeding and seasonal works across Council-owned land.
Maintain and inspect play areas, parks and recreational spaces, reporting defects and undertaking basic repairs where appropriate.
Assist with routine and ad-hoc play area inspections and ensure sites are safe, clean and presentable.
Plant, maintain and enhance town flower beds, shrub beds and landscaped areas in accordance with seasonal planting plans.
Install, maintain and refresh planters throughout the town, including soil preparation, planting, watering and general upkeep.
Water, maintain and monitor hanging baskets and other planted displays, ensuring high standards of presentation throughout the growing season.
Cemetery
Assist with the maintenance of the cemetery including grass cutting, paths, planting, memorial safety checks and general upkeep.
Support preparation for burials, including digging (where required), setting out and post-burial reinstatement.
Maintain a respectful and professional approach when working in sensitive environments.
Improvement Projects and Installations
Support and deliver town improvement and enhancement projects of varying scale, from small reactive works to larger planned schemes.
Undertake and assist with more substantial practical works where required, such as reinstatement of paths and hard standings, fencing and boundary works, installations within play areas, and clearance or preparation of land and plots.
Assist with the installation, repair and maintenance of street furniture, including benches, bins, signage, bollards, fencing and planters.
Carry out basic construction, repair and improvement works such as paving repairs, painting, minor joinery, fencing works and general DIY tasks, working to specifications and agreed project plans.
Work collaboratively with supervisors, contractors and other teams to support delivery of larger projects safely, efficiently and to an agreed standard.
Events and Community Support
Assist with the set-up, operation and dismantling of town events, including moving equipment, installing temporary structures, barriers and signage.
Provide on-the-ground support during civic, community and council-led events as required.
Equipment, Vehicles and Health & Safety
Safely operate and maintain vehicles, machinery and tools, including mowers, strimmers, brushcutters and hand-held power tools.
Carry out routine equipment checks, basic maintenance and cleaning.
Work in accordance with health and safety legislation, risk assessments and safe systems of work, including working adjacent to roads.
General Duties
Work flexibly across the Outdoor Team to support larger projects and peak workloads.
Liaise professionally with councillors, staff, contractors and members of the public.
Undertake training as required to support the role and service development.
Carry out any other duties commensurate with the role as reasonably required.
