Role Summary
We are seeking a Packaging Compliance Technologist to take ownership of quality management systems, compliance frameworks, and regulatory obligations across our packaging supply chain. This role ensures that all packaging materials meet the requirements of BRCGS, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and the UK's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, while driving continuous improvement and reducing risk.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and manage documentation and controls in line with BRCGS and ISO 9001 quality management systems.
Conduct internal audits and prepare for external audits (BRCGS, ISO, FSC).
Lead the implementation, monitoring, and improvement of the company's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in relation to packaging operations.
Monitor, interpret, and ensure full compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), UK Packaging Waste Regulations, and Plastic Packaging Tax.
Track and interpret changes in packaging legislation (e.g., UK Plastic Packaging Tax, Extended Producer Responsibility) and proactively update internal stakeholders.
Manage and maintain Westpak's packaging compliance database and technical records.
Liaise with third-party testing labs where necessary and interpret technical test results.
Provide technical support to customers on compliance-related queries.
Ensure packaging specifications and materials meet required standards for food contact, label accuracy, and environmental impact classifications (e.g. recyclable, compostable).
Deliver training and awareness on compliance changes, including EPR implementation and material labelling updates.
Work cross-functionally with procurement, sales, and operations to uphold compliance across the packaging lifecycle.
Requirements:
Essential:
Proven experience in packaging compliance, quality assurance, or a technical packaging role.
In-depth knowledge of UK/EU packaging legislation, food contact regulations, and environmental compliance.
Advanced level Microsoft Excel skills
Strong documentation and organisational skills.
Excellent attention to detail and analytical ability.
Effective communication skills across technical and commercial stakeholders.
Desirable:
Degree or equivalent in Packaging Technology, Food Science, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
Experience with FSC, PEFC, ISO 14001, or other environmental standards.
Knowledge of sustainable packaging innovations and trends.
