Role Summary





The Paint Shop Team Leader is responsible for leading and supervising a team of paint technicians carrying out high-quality surface preparation, painting, and finishing of passenger rolling stock. The role ensures all paint activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality, environmental, and rail industry standards.

Key Responsibilities




Lead, coordinate, and supervise a team of paint shop technicians working on passenger train vehicles. Allocate daily tasks, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to production schedules and deadlines. Manage the daily recording of shop floor staff hours in SAP, ensuring all time is fully accounted for. Undertake hands-on painting, preparation, and finishing work when required. Ensure all painting activities comply with company procedures, manufacturer specifications, and rail industry standards. Monitor surface preparation processes including, sanding, masking, and cleaning. Working with Quality department & carry out quality inspections to ensure high standards of finish, durability, and presentation ready to hand back to production. Provide technical guidance, training, and development support to team members. Liaise with engineers, production planners, and quality teams to resolve technical or operational issues. Maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, inspections, and environmental controls. Ensure correct use, care, and maintenance of spray equipment, booths, extraction systems, and PPE. Drive continuous improvement in paint processes, efficiency, safety, and quality. Act as the first point of contact for health & safety, environmental, or operational issues within the paint shop. Booking shop floor staff hours daily and ensuring all hours are accounted for (SAP)



Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance




Ensure compliance with all company safety procedures, COSHH regulations, and rail industry standards. Oversee safe handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, thinners, and hazardous waste. Ensure appropriate PPE is worn at all times (respiratory protection, coveralls, gloves, eye protection). Maintain ventilation, extraction, and booth safety systems in line with regulations. Comply with environmental regulations relating to emissions, waste, and chemical use. Fulfil responsibilities under the

Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of staff and others affected by paint shop activities. + While tasks may be delegated, overall responsibility remains with the Team Leader.







Collaboration & Communication




Work closely with All production teams to deliver projects on time. Communicate any quality concerns, delays, or safety issues promptly to management. Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and continuous improvement meetings.

Skills & Competencies




Time-served paint technician with relevant qualifications or proven industry experience. Experience in paint application within the rail, automotive, aerospace, or heavy engineering sector. Previous supervisory or team leadership experience in a paint shop or industrial environment. Strong knowledge of surface preparation, paint systems, and spray application techniques. Understanding of COSHH, environmental controls, and rail industry safety standards. Ability to read and understand work instructions, technical specifications, and drawings. Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.



Physical & Working Requirements




Comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, and within spray booth environments. Good manual dexterity and attention to detail. Willingness to work alternating shifts (earlies, lates, nights) as required. Ability to pass a medical assessment, including respiratory clearance if required.
