The Role
Ambrey is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Paralegal or Qualified Contracts & Commercial Lawyer to join our in-house legal team on a 14-month fixed-term contract (maternity cover).
This full-time position at the Ambrey Group is ideal for a Paralegal with a strong commercial law background. Based at our Hereford or Southampton office, the role offers a unique opportunity to work across a diverse and fast-paced caseload. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with the legal and compliance management team, supporting legal, regulatory, and compliance functions across all current and future business lines. This role is dynamic and varied, making it perfect for someone who thrives on challenge. The post will report to the General Counsel.
Responsibilities
Advise on contract management and assist in drafting, reviewing, editing, and amending commercial agreements.
Prepare proposals and agreements for negotiation and execution.
Research and apply national and international legislation and regulations.
Support the implementation of industry and corporate legal standards.
Manage the company's insurance framework, including claims handling.
Maintain Group corporate records and legal templates.
Assist in developing and implementing internal policies and procedures.
Provide support on corporate and commercial legal matters.
Contribute to internal training and development programmes.
Represent the Group with third-party stakeholders and industry bodies.
Manage insurance placement for the Group's fleet of vessels.
Advise on BIMCO contracts and negotiate terms with clients.
Own and report HSSE statistics across the Group.
Maintain and develop the Group's risk assessment framework.
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of maritime and commercial contracts, including charterparties, shipbuilding agreements, sale & purchase contracts, ship finance agreements, service agreements, and logistics arrangements.
Ensure contractual compliance with relevant maritime law, international conventions, and industry frameworks (e.g., BIMCO).
Conduct legal research into shipping, trade, and contract law.
Prepare client-ready reports, briefings, and internal legal memoranda.
Assist with due diligence and matter management for vessel acquisitions, financings, and leasing arrangements.
Provide guidance on contractual rights, obligations, risks, and dispute avoidance.
Support clients with cross-border commercial transactions in shipping and logistics.
Liaise with external counsel, regulatory bodies, and maritime authorities as required.
Maintain organised case files, precedents, and contract templates.
Coordinate with internal stakeholders, clients, and counterparties to ensure smooth transaction and project delivery.
Qualifications and skills
Law degree (LLB or equivalent); LPC/SQE qualification or admitted solicitor preferred.
Previous experience as a Paralegal or Junior Lawyer in commercial contracts, maritime/shipping, or trade law (private practice or in-house).
Solid knowledge of contract law and shipping/maritime frameworks (e.g., BIMCO).
Experience with cross-border transactions and/or international arbitration is advantageous.
Strong drafting, research, and negotiation skills.
Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
Commercial awareness of the shipping and logistics industry.
Analytical mindset with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Team-oriented, proactive, and client-focused approach.
Qualified Solicitor holding the following qualifications:
a paralegal practice award, certificate, diploma, or higher diploma
CILEx qualifications.
an HNC/HND or foundation degree in law, legal studies, or paralegal practice
a law degree
3 years in house experience.
Strong commercial law experience, ideally within an international or maritime context.
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and legal research skills.
High level of initiative and ability to work independently under pressure.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal document management systems.
Excellent administrative and organisational abilities.
Terms and conditions
Salary: Commensurate with experience and dependent on role
Annual Leave: 25 days per annum plus public holidays
Working hours: 08:30am to 17:30pm Monday to Friday.
