Job description
Purpose of the Job
The Children's Commissioner for England sits at the heart of Government, delivering for children, and championing their voices and needs. This includes a particular responsibility towards children who rely on the state for their safety or protection.
As Participation Officer within the Communications team, you will be responsible for managing the Children's Commissioner participation programmes for young people. This will include setting up new programmes and developing relationships with key stakeholders.
As a member of a small team, you will work with colleagues on a range of associated aspects of the work of the OCC and contribute to the overall performance of the team.
Key responsibilities
Run the CCO's participation programmes, in line with their terms of reference.
Work with the Senior Participation Officer to prioritise safeguarding of participants
Maintain best practice when data handling
Organise and manage the administration for CCO's participation work including databases
Liaise with key stakeholders as required
Help share insights and findings with the wider OCC teams
Be aware of legislation relevant to the advisory groups
Support and assist with wider CCO work where appropriate

Have experience of community engagement/participative methods
Have experience working with young people
Be able to organise events - both in person and online
Have good problem-solving skills and able to use judgement to make sound decisions
Be able to work to meet deadlines and prioritise competing demands

An eye for emerging issues and trends which might influence or benefit our work
Ability to work as part of a team and collaboratively with partners, both internal and external; building rapport with stakeholders
Ability to use discretion and to demonstrate sensitivity when handling confidential information
Desirable
Experience in social and/or qualitative research
Previous experience having worked with children and young people
Public sector experience, either in local or central government
A record of working collaboratively with colleagues at every level across an organisation and with external partners
Experience of using insight and evaluation to improve communications
Experience of writing articles for publication online or in print
Existing DBS check
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft packages such as Excel and PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook
An understanding of political/news landscape, able to advise on risks and reputational issues and demonstrate political awareness
