About the Role
We are an established civil engineering company preparing to expand into a group structure. As we take this next step, we are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Accountant to support the transition and help design efficient financial systems across the emerging group.
This role is ideal for someone experienced in multi?entity finance who can guide a small business through organisational change, implement best?practice controls, and provide financial insight to ensure a smooth and compliant expansion.
The position is part?time for 1 day per week, with flexibility to suit your circumstances. The role is office?based and may appeal to someone balancing childcare, easing into retirement, or seeking a reduced?hours professional role.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Group Expansion
Lead the planning and implementation of financial structures for new group entities.
Manage intercompany processes including recharges, shared services, cost centres, and group reporting frameworks.
Support Directors in establishing financial control, governance, and compliance policies.
Financial Management
Maintain accurate accounting records for the main company and new entities as they are established.
Support the Senior Finance Manager with monthly management accounts and organisational cashflow forecasting.
Provide financial analysis to inform business decisions during the expansion.
Construction & Rail Sector Responsibilities
Work with the Commercial Director and Department Managers to provide cost reporting into organisational cashflow.
Apply strong understanding of sector?specific processes, including applications for payment and HMRC requirements.
Operational Finance & Compliance
Contribute to the development of payroll and subcontractor payment processes.
Support VAT returns and liaise with HMRC as required.
Assist with accounts receivable and payable across multiple entities.
Prepare year?end accounts and support tax preparation.
Working Relationship with the Commercial Director
A close working relationship will be essential to ensure strong financial controls, robust reporting, and effective governance throughout the transition to a group structure.
Skills & Experience
Essential
Experience working within, or helping to establish, a group company structure.
Strong understanding of intercompany accounting, multi?entity ledgers, and consolidation principles.
Hands?on experience with CIS, Corporation Tax, VAT, PAYE, and UK accounting standards.
Proficiency with accounting software and commercial banking systems.
Ability to design processes proactively and manage change within a small business.
Must have the right to work in the UK.
Desirable
Experience in civil engineering, rail, construction, or other project?based industries.
Exposure to restructuring, acquisitions, or company expansion.
ICAS / ACCA / CIMA
BSc in Accounting or similar level of accreditation
Personal Qualities
Practical, organised, and able to work independently.
Confident communicating with Directors and advising on financial structure.
Comfortable working in a small but evolving business environment.
Strong attention to detail with a solutions?focused mindset.
Collaborative team player.
