NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Writing as Critical Inquiry, a course sponsored by NYU Liberal Studies. Teaching commences in the Spring term (Jan-May 2026).
Course Description
Writing as Critical Inquiry introduces students to advanced reading, writing, and critical thinking skills with an explicit emphasis on developing complex and nuanced lines of inquiry. The course also introduces the research and research management skills necessary for academic work and writing beyond academic contexts. After having learned in Writing as Exploration (in the first semester) how to present and interpret or otherwise respond to different types of subject material - for example, personal experiences, written and visual texts, objects, and/or social phenomena - students in Writing as Critical Inquiry learn more complex methods for engaging these skills through individualised, research-based writing. Writing as Critical Inquiry courses are themed - most sections devote the semester to a specific realm of inquiry around an interdisciplinary topic that is up to the instructor. The course should engage with global issues and perspectives through its theme and, by extension, its reading and writing assignments.
Learning Objectives
A student's successful completion of the course should demonstrate: An advanced ability to develop a complex, challenging inquiry in response to a variety of forms of evidence such as textual, geographical, visual, aural, public events and/or social phenomena
An ability to think globally about subjects, themes, experiences, and/or research/writing practices
An advanced ability to contextualise, analyse and synthesise a range of evidence in support of constructing an essay that incorporates research
A demonstrated facility with research tools, methodologies, and databases
An ability to assess the quality and utility of various forms, as well as the ability to cite and critically engage with a wide variety of sources
An ability to discuss and evaluate the formal qualities of their own and other people's writing.
Expectation of Hours
The semester is 15 weeks (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and the class meets twice a week for 75 minutes per session. The class is currently scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons; this is preferred but depending on the candidate there is some scope to negotiate the meeting time. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute "office hour" per week, during which time they will be available to meet with students.
Teaching information
Approaches to teaching will vary, but an emphasis on workshops, in-class writing, and discussion (as opposed to lecture) should be used to further foster students' abilities to closely, critically, and creatively think, read, and write. The course also takes up Writing as Exploration's emphasis on fostering students' abilities to rigorously revise. Typically, workshops use a combination of small group work, large group work, and individual student-instructor conferences. The course makes use of informal and formal writing, with particular attention to the process of writing and revising drafts of formal essays.
Approaches will also support and enhance students' abilities to conduct and manage individual research in a deliberate manner, whether through library, database, online, archival, interview, ethnographic, and/or other research practices as appropriate to the course.
