Patient Transport Assistant

Reports To: Directors

Location: Unit 5, Mona Industrial Estate, Gwalchmai, Anglesey.

Job Purpose: The Patient Transport Assistant is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of patients to and from medical facilities, ensuring their comfort and well-being during the journey. This role supports healthcare professionals in delivering efficient patient care by coordinating patient movement across departments or between facilities.

Key Responsibilities:



1. Patient Transport:

Safely transport patients between hospital departments, clinics, wards, or external locations (e.g., homes, care facilities) using wheelchairs, trolleys, or stretchers. Assist patients in and out of vehicles, wheelchairs, or stretchers, ensuring their comfort and safety at all times. Follow infection control protocols, using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.

2. Patient Support and Care



Provide a friendly and professional service, ensuring patients feel comfortable and at ease. Assist with the positioning and moving of patients in accordance with their medical needs, and report any concerns to healthcare staff. Maintain a patient-centered approach, respecting patient confidentiality and dignity.

3. Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance:



Ensure that all patient transport equipment, including vehicles, wheelchairs, and stretchers, are clean, well-maintained, and in good working order. Report any vehicle or equipment faults to the relevant department for timely repair.

4. Communication and Co-ordination:



Work closely with healthcare teams, including nurses, doctors, and porters, to coordinate the timely and efficient transport of patients. Maintain accurate records of patient movements and ensure compliance with transport schedules. Liaise with family members or caregivers, as appropriate, to provide updates on transport schedules.
5. Health and Safety:

Follow all health and safety protocols related to patient movement, including manual handling techniques and risk assessments. Be aware of and adhere to infection control measures and procedures. Respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations, assisting medical teams where needed.

6. Key Qualifications and Skills: Education



High School Diploma or equivalent. Certification in First Aid, CPR, or basic life support (BLS) (preferred). Valid driver's licence (if required for vehicle operation).

7. Skills:



Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in challenging situations. Good physical stamina, with the ability to lift, move, and position patients. Excellent organizational and time management skills.

8. Experience:



Previous experience in a healthcare environment, patient transport, or similar role (preferred). Experience in operating patient transport equipment such as wheelchairs, stretchers, or mobility aids.

9. Personal Attributes:

10. Working Conditions:



Physical work, including walking, standing, lifting, and moving patients. Shift-based work, which may include weekends, and public holidays. Exposure to a healthcare environment with potential for interaction with patients with various medical conditions.
