About us:

An intern position is open within the Payload Systems Engineering department of the Telecom Business Division of Airbus Defence and Space.

Our business designs, builds and tests satellite spacecraft. Covering disciplines in Radio Frequency (RF)/Microwave equipment, Satellite platform, Antenna Systems, Satellite Communication Systems and Digital Signal Processing.

Our processes focus on delivering a product which has to withstand the harshest of all environments, and our communication payloads must operate with high levels of reliability in the most extreme conditions, pushing materials and technology to their very limits.

This role is an opportunity to approach system engineering in a unique context, where you will be able to learn and extend your capabilities in a multi-disciplinary working environment embedded on projects with experienced engineers.

The position is based on the Portsmouth site which is Airbus Centre of Excellence for Telecom payloads.

What you will be doing:

The exact topic of the internship will have to be defined hand-in-hand with the interns and will take into account expectations / skills and abilities.

Typical topics could include:

  • Support to project work: shadow a project\xe2\x80\x99s RF engineer, Electrical engineer, or Telecom Payload Equipment Specialist.
  • Take part in the nominal activities supported by system engineering such as performance analysis; establishment of payload models; review of equipment results or support to payload Assembly, Integration and Test.
  • Process; methods and tools: review modes of working on a given topic (proposal; support to design; performance analysis; preparation for AIT; etc.) contribute to the continuous improvement initiatives by assisting in process definition and documentation; in standardisation of methods and in tools development roadmap. This could include the development of a specific / dedicated tool or model.
  • Support the Assembly Integration and test phases, first at payload level, and then at spacecraft level (for environmental tests for instance). By taking in the analysis of the test results, working hand-in-hand with the Assembly, Integration and Test operations team (working in a clean room environment); lead investigations, address non-compliance and present results reports to the customer.
Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:
  • Studying towards a degree in Telecommunications, Digital Signal Processing, Electrical or Electronic engineering, mathematics or physics;
  • Basic knowledge of computer programming;
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with modelling tools such as Matlab Simulink; SystemVue; ADS (Advanced Design Suite); etc. would be a plus;
  • Understanding of utilisation of RF instruments, test equipment; test techniques will be desired.
  • Desire to work in the Space Industry is essential.
