Personal Adviser - Connexions

----------------------------------

Job description
Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

(part-time may be considered)

Are you passionate about making a difference to the future of young people in Leicester? Would you like to play a key role in providing information, advice and guidance to young people aged 16-25*, and to re-engage those whose are not in employment, education and training (NEET)?

The Connexions team is looking for a well-organised and tenacious individual to join us as a Personal Adviser supporting a caseload of young people and provide information, advice and guidance in a variety of settings. The role involves working with those who are NEET, or those in education who are more vulnerable to NEET. This includes individuals with SEND needs and those who are care experienced.

This is a full-time, permanent post working 37 hours per week. You'll have a base in the city centre to meet young people, as well as working with them in schools and community settings and be supporting them to access education provision and employment.

It is a hybrid role so you'll be able to work from home some of the time, and you'll have a degree of flexibility in planning your working week. Ultimately though this role is about engaging with young people and removing barriers, so you need to be willing to work in different ways and in a variety of locations to get results.

The majority of young people you'll be working with will be 16-18, although you may work with those up to 25 who have SEND needs or are care experienced.

What you'll be doing

You'll offer impartial information, advice guidance and support to young people, providing ongoing activities to help them overcome barriers that prevent their capacity to engage with learning and education and employment. You'll signpost them to other agencies and partners and enable them to access information which will assist them in finding suitable provision or employment. All of your work will be recorded accurately, and you need to be able to provide information for young people in an appropriate format.

On a day-to-day basis, you will be trying to engage with, and then meeting, young people on your caseload. This could be in a school applying for post-16 provision or contributing to an annual review. Or it could be in a children's centre meeting with someone who is NEET. You might have to liaise with a parent a number of times before a young person agrees to meet with you and on another day you might be accompanying an individual for an interview or assement with a training provider.

You will be spending a lot of time on tracking young people who might not always respond to your attempts to find out what they are doing and may ignore offers of support.

Working closely with schools, colleges, training providers and employers, you'll provide employment and training advice to identified young people to enable them to remain in education or training or to access employment.

You will be working closely with colleagues in SEND, education welfare, virtual school, health and social care teams, youth justice and leaving care teams, as well as liaising with those in other areas such as economic regeneration and DWP.

What you'll need

Some experience of supporting vulnerable young people is necessary, ideally on a 1:1 basis. You'll have a knowledge and understanding of the challenges and issues they face, and how these can be addressed.

We're not necessarily looking for a formal qualification in advice and guidance as training will be given. This is about the skills you bring in being able to work with young people who may not always fully engage.

An understanding of post-16 provision and/or experience of liaison with employers would be helpful

You'll need to be a resilient, proactive and tenacious and someone who does not give up.

An ability to develop and manage working relationships with key staff in schools and with other professionals.

Excellent administrative and organisation skills, including with IT systems, are essential as the work that goes on behind the scenes impacts on our results and outcomes.

Flexibility is key and you may occasionally need to work outside core hours to track or engage with your caseload.

Appointment to this role will be based on an Enhanced Children's DBS and driving licence check. The ability to travel various locations around the city, and sometimes Leicestershire, in a timely and flexible manner at various times of the day is essential.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You'll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We'll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including childcare vouchers, discounts on city buses and trains and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate.
