Full time or possible job share. This role is a self-employed position and the individual will be responsible for paying their own Income Tax, National Insurance, and pension contributions.
Salary:
20 per hour (invoiced work, paid within 12 weeks)
Job Purpose:
To work on a one-to-one basis providing sighted support to a visually impaired (VI) Visual Rehabilitation Officer (VRO) to enable them to carry out their role fully.
Main duties and responsibilities:
To drive Vision Rehabilitation Officer (VRO) and support in work
To provide visual support and observations during assessments, rehabilitation sessions and mobility training
Use observational skills to relay relevant visual information, including interpretation of non-verbal communication, information about the environment, potential hazards, and evidence of any presenting injuries (safeguarding)
Support the VRO to risk assess activities in relation to the safety of service users and staff member as appropriate
Support the VRO to follow protocols in relation to safeguarding vulnerable adults
To assist the VRO with implementing rehabilitation programmes for Daily Living Skills and Mobility and Orientation Training e.g. to assist with marking appliances under the guidance of the VRO and to ensure the client is using the techniques recommended by the VRO. To assist the VRO with mobility and orientation route planning e.g. finding the appropriate bus stop and particular landmarks, buildings etc. To make the VRO aware of any potential hazards to himself and/or the service user during training sessions
Support the VRO to organise and be involved with the delivery of awareness raising sessions and training for other disciplines within Social Services, Health Authorities, voluntary and community groups and the public
To act as a sighted guide to VRO in unfamiliar indoor, outdoor or cluttered environments as required
To assist with administrative tasks such as note taking and typing reports and proofreading
To assist with entering data on to electronic client management system, keeping accurate records and recording information for monitoring purposes
To read written information to VRO as and when required
To assist with transcribing information into accessible formats e.g. large print and audio
To support VRO when attending training and meetings by taking relevant notes and providing visual support
To carry out any other task to enable VRO to carry out their role
To complete the necessary Access to Work (ATW) paperwork and manage own payment invoicing
Safeguarding
The position is subject to an enhanced DBS check completed by Sight Cymru.

Flexible Working Practice
To be flexible with regard to timings of working hours. As this job involves supporting a VRO it is essential that you can change support hours to meet the needs of the role. To be flexible regarding the person supported in order to provide support during holiday and other leave periods.
