The Ecclesbourne Practice and Roding Valley Medical Centre are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Band 4 Pharmacy Technician to join our dynamic primary care team. This is an exciting opportunity to work across two busy GP surgeries, supporting the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical care to our patients. You will work under the supervision of our Clinical Pharmacist to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines, contributing to improved patient outcomes and practice performance.

Key Responsibilities:



Undertake medicines reconciliation for new and existing patients, ensuring accurate medication records in line with practice protocols. Support the management of repeat prescriptions, including processing requests, synchronising medications, and resolving queries with patients and community pharmacies. Provide advice to patients on the safe and effective use of their medicines, including dosage, administration (e.g., inhaler techniques), and potential side effects. Assist with medication reviews by preparing patient records and liaising with the Clinical Pharmacist to identify areas for optimisation. Contribute to achieving Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) targets by supporting medicines-related initiatives. Liaise with external stakeholders, such as community pharmacies and secondary care, to ensure seamless patient care. Train and supervise junior pharmacy staff or trainees as required. Maintain accurate and confidential patient records using practice systems (e.g., EMIS or SystmOne). Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement projects to enhance prescribing practices. Promote antimicrobial stewardship and support initiatives to reduce inappropriate prescribing. Conduct post-hospital discharge summary reviews and new patient medicines reconciliation. Process clinical letters related to medicines. Support physical health checks and be willing to train in administering basic injections (Flu, Pneumococcal, B12).

Working Environment



You will be based across both The Ecclesbourne Practice and Roding Valley Medical Centre, with occasional travel across our Primary Care Network (PCN) sites as needed. This role involves direct patient interaction, both face-to-face and over the phone, as well as collaboration with GPs, nurses, pharmacists, and administrative staff. Flexibility to work across both sites is essential.

Person Specification



Essential Qualifications and Experience:

Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or working towards completion of registration. NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent qualification recognised by the GPhC). Minimum of 1 year of post-qualification experience in a pharmacy setting (hospital, community, or primary care). Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
Skills and Abilities:

Strong understanding of medicines reconciliation and optimisation principles. Ability to accurately dispense and manage prescriptions with attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex information to patients and colleagues. Competent in using IT systems, including Microsoft Office and GP clinical systems (e.g., EMIS, SystmOne). Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Knowledge:

Knowledge of pharmacy law, ethics, and medication safety standards. Familiarity with primary care concepts such as QOF, shared care prescribing, and PCN Direct Enhanced Services (DES). Awareness of current NHS policies and guidelines related to prescribing and patient care.

Desirable:

Experience working in a primary care or GP practice setting. Completion of (or working towards) an accredited medicines management course or equivalent. Familiarity with the Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway (PCPEP) or similar training. Experience supervising or training others in a pharmacy environment.

Additional Requirements:



Due to the nature of the role, the ability to travel independently across the locality is essential. This post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
