PhD Research Scientist - Biotechnology required on a permanent basis in Manchester. Requiring a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or similar), with an understanding of cell cultivation for producing metabolites, and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes. An interest in personal care products and markets is also advantageous.

SRG are working with a highly innovative company who have been creating speciality products for a range of markets, including personal care and cosmetics, for over 30 years. With a focus on developing their natural product development team, they are now seeking a PhD Research Scientist to support in developing natural speciality ingredients from both microbiological and plant sources to launch into the personal care market. This is an exciting new role, in a growing and developing team, with ideal candidates having recently completed a PhD in Biology, Biotechnology or Biochemistry (or similar), with knowledge of cell cultivation for producing metabolites, and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes. Candidates with an MSC and proven industrial experience in a research role are also encouraged to apply.

Benefits: You will join a successful business who have ambitious plans to expand their Biotechnology team launching into the personal care market. 37.5 working hours/week, 8.30am and 4.40pm, Mon-Fri. Excellent company pension, discretionary annual performance-related bonus and 25 days holiday plus 8 statutory bank holidays.

Role / Description

  • Support in the design and development of bioprocesses to produce speciality ingredients and molecules to the personal care market
  • Develop technical transfer and scale-up packages to support commercial production, whilst also supporting in process transfer
  • Undertake biosynthetic processes and routes to produce novel speciality molecules
  • Support in both upstream and downstream bioprocess research
  • Plan, manage and conduct multiple projects, ensuring completion within set deadlines
  • Accurately record experimental data accordingly
  • Keep updated with current academic literature and market developments
  • Provide technical assistance to other departments as and when required
Requirements
  • PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or similar)
  • An MSc with proven industrial experience in research will also be considered
  • Understanding of cell cultivation for production of metabolites and/ or cell lysates.
  • Experience and knowledge of metabolic pathways and enzymes.
  • Experience and knowledge of developing bio-processes.
  • Understanding of aseptic technique.
  • Experience developing downstream processing and purification techniques is desirable but not essential
