Job Overview:
DocTap, a leading private GP service in the UK, is seeking an experienced, registered Biomedical Scientist to help deliver our innovative and comprehensive POCT service. This is an exciting role that uniquely combines laboratory skillsets with clinical contact to streamline the patient journey from consultation to testing to results.
The selected candidate must excel in communication and time management, interacting with patients, laboratory colleagues, doctors and IT engineers. The ideal candidate will play a key role in supporting our clinical services by carrying out health screening measurements, obtaining patient samples, and conducting diagnostic tests using validated medical devices at the point of care to ensure timely and accurate results that aid in faster patient diagnosis and treatment.
They will additionally play a key role in analysing patient samples with both manual and automated methods, reporting findings, ensuring the accuracy and validity of analyses, and coordinating with medical professionals. As a team leader, they will also play a crucial role in maintaining compliance with governance standards and supporting the pursuit of UKAS accreditation.
They will be meticulous in their attention to detail and play a pivotal role in laboratory quality assurance processes, including quality control workflows and observing the standards set out in the quality management system. Experience within a UKAS-accredited laboratory setting is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Health screening and sample collection
: Measure health screening metrics and collect patient samples (training will be provided).
Sample preparation
: Use pre-analysis protocols to prepare samples for immediate use with PoCT devices.
Perform PoCT diagnostics
: Delivering prompt and precise testing outcomes using both manual and automated tools. The role involves conducting routine blood science analyses and other POCT sample types, along with validating, interpreting, and reporting these results.
Results authorisation
: Authorize test outcomes and initiate additional testing when necessary. Validate results in line with POCT Standard Operating Procedures.
Quality control and EQA: Verify the accuracy and reliability of analytical methods, maintaining quality performance through internal quality control and external assessments to guarantee the precision of POCT equipment.
Equipment Maintenance
: Ensure the upkeep and proper functioning of intricate analytical devices. Follow calibration and equipment maintenance protocols, troubleshoot issues, and liaise with managers for technical support.
Monitor and manage POCT supplies and storage facilities in the laboratory areas.
Collaboration
: Work closely with DocTap's doctors and clinical directors to provide a stellar health assessment and diagnostic service. Communicate results in real-time, allowing for rapid patient diagnosis and treatment.
Safety standards
: Follow strict protocols to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper disposal of biohazardous materials.
Data entry and record-keeping
: Accurately document test results and maintain patient records. Utilise electronic health record systems to ensure proper integration of diagnostic data.
Training and development
: Stay up-to-date with the latest PoCT regulatory standards to ensure best practices. Provide training to staff as required.
Required Qualifications and Skills:Qualifications
BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
HCPC state registration
Experience
Demonstrable Post-Registration experience in a Chemistry or Haematology laboratory
Experience in validating patient results in Chemistry and/or Haematology
Familiarity with ISO15189 accreditation for laboratories and/or ISO22870 for PoCT.
Excellent understanding of the requirements of a quality management system.
Technical proficiency:
Familiarity with laboratory machinery and instruments, and their maintenance.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with minimal supervision.
Good computer literacy and knowledge of data protection.
Attention to detail:
Strong focus on accuracy and quality to ensure reliable test results.
Communication skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with the clinical team and report findings.
Preferred/Desirable Skills:
Regulatory knowledge: Good understanding of UKAS laboratory regulations.
Quality management experience or working towards quality management development.
Experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Familiarity with infection control protocols and health and safety measures.
