We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant within the School of Medicine, to support an Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) funded research project.
Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (LICs) are an increasingly popular way to deliver clinical placements to undergraduate medical students. LICs are known to educate a sustainable workforce and provide educational benefits, however, they require different resources than the traditional 'block rotation' placement model and provide a different experience for both learner and educator.
This project seeks to understand whether administering multiple LIC models concurrently is a viable approach to providing greater, high-quality, placement capacity within the limits of expected future resources. It will conduct an international survey and a focussed UK case study to fill these knowledge gaps. We aim to understand whether the approaches found to be effective elsewhere apply in the UK, and 'what works' in the Scottish context.
The Postdoctoral Research Assistant role provides an exciting opportunity to, with the support of the team, lead the day-to-day running of the project including the participant recruitment and the analysis of the project's qualitative and quantitative datasets. You would also take the lead in reporting the research findings in project reports, summary documents and other outputs, including academic journal publications.
The research is a collaboration between researchers at the universities of Dundee, St Andrews and Newcastle and our partners in NHS Fife. You would be joining a team with substantial expertise in the field, who meet regularly and who prioritise a supportive work environment. It is an excellent opportunity to expand your own knowledge and skills, and provides opportunities for scholarly activity and CPD.
We utilise a flexible working policy and the post holder would be eligible for homeworking on a regular basis by mutual agreement.
We are advertising this position at 0.4FTE for 9 months duration, however other part-time arrangements will be considered. We hope that the Postdoctoral Researcher will join the team in January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. We intend for interviews to take place in the week of the 15th December.
This post is for a fixed term as it is dependent on external funding. As such, the need for the post will cease to exist when funding runs out.
Your priorities will include: You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project, including for example, independently making decisions related to data collection and analysis, recruiting participants, allocating the research duties, and taking the initiative to achieve agreed-upon deliverables and deadlines.
You will take key responsibility for accurately monitoring and reporting project progress, promptly identifying issues and communicating these to the team. You will be the key contact for communications with research participants.
You will lead the participant recruitment for surveys and interviews, working proactively and responsively to meet recruitment targets within required timeframes. The research team have extensive networks to support you with this.
You will undertake analysis of the project's complex qualitative and quantitative datasets. To ensure the analysis is completed within the required timescales, you will allocate duties across the team and encourage other team members to complete tasks in a timely manner. You will maintain detailed and accurate records and manage project data in accordance with ethical requirements and data management plans.
Who we're looking for:
An individual who has obtained a PhD (or has a comparable level of experience) in a relevant subject e.g. education, social sciences, psychology
Experience designing and conducting semi-structured or narrative research interviews
Familiar with using theoretical frameworks and/or applying theory during analysis to analyse and interpret research data and draw appropriate conclusions from the findings
Someone able to make independent decisions about the daily running of a research project
A highly organised individual, able to keep good records, including detailed and technical notes on recruitment, methodology and analytical process
