Postdoctoral Research Assistant In Climate Forecasting

Oxford, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join our research groups "Predictability of Weather and Climate" and "Climate Dynamics" at the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP) sub-department of the department of Physics, at the University of Oxford.

The post will address a significant problem in climate forecasting known as the Signal-to-Noise Paradox (SNP). The SNP indicates that real-world predictability is often higher than models suggest, implying that the predictable signals in the forecast models are underestimated and posing a challenge for reliable climate forecasting. The aim of the project is to develop innovative solutions to better understand and correct the SNP, improving climate predictions for the Euro-Atlantic region and beyond.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in weather and climate science, mathematics, physics, statistical science or relevant related fields. Demonstration of drive and ability to perform novel research of international standing would be essential as well as a good understanding of atmospheric physics, dynamics and predictability on seasonal timescales.

The post is full time and fixed term for 21 months.

The closing date for applications is midday, UK time on Monday, 5 January 2026

You will be required to upload a CV and Supporting Statement as part of your online application. The Supporting Statement should include a cover letter and should also clearly describe how you meet each of the selection criteria listed in the job description.
