Job Description


This is a Leverhulme Trust-funded, collaborative research project on mites of bumblebees between the University of Sussex and the University of Reading. A PDRA is sought to work on library preparations or bioinformatics of ancient DNA of arthropods, especially mites (Acari), at Dr. Perotti\'s lab, School of Biological Sciences of the University of Reading.

This position is available on either a Part-time basis for 4.5 months or a Full-time for 2.5 months starting 18th August 2023.

The post holder will assist Dr Perotti in the study of mites (Acari); she/he will also assist in library preparations for sequencing of DNA from modern and ancient samples, e.g. from museum collections or perform bioinformatic analyses.

Generic duties will include:

  • Assisting in the design and implementation of the research project as directed by the supervisor.
  • Sharing results with the supervisor.
  • Cataloguing, analysing data and maintaining data records (including ensuring data management plan, security and backup).
  • Assisting in the drafting publications in scientific journals, and assisting in the completion of other aspects related to the publication of research findings as requested by the supervisor.
  • Participating in research project meetings and discussions.
  • Support in advising and collaborating with the training of undergraduate project students, Masters and PhD students, when appropriate.
The successful candidate will have:
  • IT and data handling skills
  • Master degree in biology or related field
  • Knowledge of Molecular biology or Bioinformatics
  • Experience in library preparations or bioinformatic pipelines
  • Ability to work independently/on own initiative
