Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Oxford, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join Professor Miles Carroll's team, a group that works at the intersection of field epidemiology, laboratory science, and data analytics to understand how high-consequence viruses emerge and spread. The team focuses on pathogens such as Ebola virus, Marburg virus, and SARS-CoV-2, bringing together molecular data, ecological information, and spatial analysis to answer questions that are central to outbreak prediction and preparedness. This is a chance to work with a genuinely multidisciplinary group and contribute to research with clear real-world importance.

You will be responsible for leading analytical work that combines epidemiological datasets, field molecular findings, wildlife-human interface information, and geospatial data to reveal where spillover events occur and what drives them. You will take the lead on spatial epidemiology projects, looking at early transmission patterns, environmental and host factors, and broader emergence risks. You will also support colleagues including research assistants, technicians, PhD students, and other postdoc offering advice and guidance on spatial modelling, One Health approaches, and field epidemiology. Your work will involve developing and adapting analytical methods, managing your own research activities, and contributing ideas to the wider research programme. There will also be opportunities to represent the group at seminars, conferences, and policy-relevant meetings, and to take part in public engagement activities.

You will have, or be close to the completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant discipline such as Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Veterinary Science, Ecology, Public Health, or a closely related field. You will have a solid grounding in epidemiology and virology and understanding of working with public-health or global-health bodies such as WHO, FAO, OIE, or national agencies. You will need to show that you can manage your own research, contribute to publications, communicate clearly, and bring forward ideas for new research and funding. Strong written and verbal communication skills are key, along with the confidence to present your work and represent the research group in collaborative settings.

Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract until 30 September 2026 and is funded by NIHR.
