Job Description

Reporting to Professor Fernanda Pirie, the post holder will be a researcher on the project entitled ''Tibetan law: the socio-historic exploration of a unique legal system".

The postholder will have responsibility for translating and analysing Tibetan legal texts and other materials, researching the socio-historic context of the texts, and preparing material for publication.

The successful candidate should hold or be close to completion of a relevant PhD/DPhil, together with experience of research on Tibetan History; experience and skills in the translation of classical Tibetan, as used in administrative documents from the 17th and 18th centuries; experience in preparing translations of Tibetan administrative texts; ability to manage their own academic research and associated activities; experience of contributing to publications and giving presentations. Skills in classical Mongolian and experience of research on Mongolian history and independently managing a discrete area of a research project.

This post is full time and fixed term for 24 months from 1 October 2025 until 30 September 2027. The postholder will be based at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Manor Road, Manor Road Building, OX1 3UQ, and will be required to be in the office for a minimum of 3 days a week during term time and when not undertaking fieldwork activities
