About the role
------------------
We are looking to appoint PGTAs to support teaching and learning in our BSc Sociology modules. This will involve working with the academic module leads to deliver small group teaching and/or placement support for students taking the above modules in the EPS Department.
The main duties of the posts are to support the teaching and learning on one of two modules:
'Identities: Sociological Perspectives"
and '
Global Issues: Interconnections & Disconnections'
Identities: Sociological Perspectives
uses the lens of identities to develop students' understanding of contemporary sociological theories. The module introduces students to the sociology of how individuals and groups think about themselves, others and where they belong in the world. It considers how identities are made through relations and processes, shaped by local and global influences, as well as their inherently political nature, especially as they are often based on social divisions and experiences of inequalities. Employing concepts from different perspectives, from symbolic interactionism and poststructuralism to intersectionality, it probes complex interactions of structure and agency.
Global Issues: Interconnections & Disconnections
engages with contemporary sociological thinking, including on issues such as globalization, urbanization, financial crisis and the global economy, migration, technology, the environment, pandemics and transnational activism.
Successful candidates will be given training in support of their roles. PGTAs are expected to be able to commit to being present on the Bloomsbury campus during the terms for which teaching is allocated and during the assessment period as required. These roles are available from January 2026 to UCL Post-Graduate Research (PGR) students who are registered from 23rd September 2025. Please be aware that students may only be employed up to 180 hours in total as a PGTA across all UCL programmes.
Please make sure that you state clearly in your application which module(s) you feel that you could teach on. It may not be possible to offer you a position on your preferred module.
For informal inquiries about these positions, please Dr Benjamin Abrams; email: b.abrams@ucl.ac.uk
About you
-------------
The successful candidate will be educated to master's degree level (or having equivalent experience), in a Sociology related field and working towards a relevant postgraduate degree (PhD). You will have a specialist knowledge appropriate to the module taught and have excellent working knowledge of MS Office software including Word, Excel, email, and the internet.
