Practice Accountant

Glasgow, SCT, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

About Us:

We are a dynamic and rapidly growing accounting practice with an exciting future ahead. We service small business clients over Glasgow and the West.

We are seeking an experienced, ambitious professional to join us as a Small Business Partner who is based in Glasgow and surrounding areas. This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a leadership role in a firm poised for growth, where you can directly shape the direction of the business, enhance client relationships, and drive long-term success.

In the initial phase, you'll be hands-on with client work and daily operations as the practice scales. As we expand and client demand increases, your role will evolve to focus more on leadership, business development, and hiring the right team to support continued growth. You'll be tasked with bringing in high-quality staff at the right time and building the team for the next stage of the firm's development.

Role Overview:

As a Small Business Partner, you will play a central role in the operation and future growth of the practice. Initially, the role will require a hands-on approach, including working directly with clients, overseeing compliance and advisory services, and managing day-to-day operations. As the practice grows and we bring on new clients, you will transition into a more strategic leadership role, focusing on building the team and expanding the practice's offerings.

Key Responsibilities: Hands-On Client Work & Operations (Initial Phase)

Take an active role in delivering client services, including preparing accounts, tax returns, and providing advisory support. Maintain direct relationships with clients, ensuring high-quality service and timely delivery of all work. Manage client queries, offering solutions and insights to help clients grow and manage their businesses. Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring everything runs efficiently as the practice grows and scales.

Leadership & Team Development (Post-Expansion)

Initial Phase: There will be no staff in the early stages, and you will work directly with the owner on client work and operations. Future Responsibility: As the practice expands, you will take responsibility for hiring the right team to support growth. You will play a key role in selecting and onboarding new staff members when the time is right, ensuring that the team aligns with the practice's values and vision. Oversee team performance and development as the team grows, ensuring they receive the necessary training and support to thrive. Foster a positive work culture that promotes collaboration, growth, and professional development.

Client Relationship & Management

Manage and grow a portfolio of clients, offering both compliance and strategic advisory services. Develop strong, long-term relationships with clients, becoming their trusted advisor for accounting and business needs. Drive client satisfaction through high-quality service and bespoke solutions tailored to clients' specific needs. Business Development: Focus on attracting new clients, expanding the firm's client base, and identifying opportunities for growth.

Business Development & Strategic Growth (Transition Phase)

New Client Acquisition: As you transition into the role of Small Business Partner, a key part of your responsibilities will be actively driving new business. This includes networking, attending events, and identifying new client opportunities. KPI-Based Rewards: Your success in client acquisition and business growth will be directly tied to KPIs, with structured rewards and incentives for meeting goals related to new client engagement and revenue generation. Work with the owner to shape and execute the firm's long-term strategic vision, ensuring that growth is sustainable and scalable. Lead the search and transition to a new office location as part of the firm's expansion plan over the next 9-12 months.

Financial Management & Operational Oversight

Oversee financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and ensuring profitability as the firm expands. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, industry standards, and best practices. Contribute to the development of internal processes, leveraging technology to improve efficiency and client service. Provide regular updates to the owner on financial performance, client satisfaction, and progress toward business development goals.

About You:

We're seeking a proactive, entrepreneurial accounting professional who is excited to lead a growing practice. You should be comfortable with hands-on client work initially and possess the leadership skills required to scale the practice and build a strong, capable team when the time comes.

Key Qualifications:

Fully qualified ACCA or ICAS accountant. At least 8-10 years of experience working within an accounting practice, with a strong track record of client management, compliance, and business development. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to guide and mentor staff as the firm grows (even though you won't have staff initially). A genuine passion for driving business growth and developing long-term relationships with clients. Ability to manage client work independently and oversee all operational aspects of the practice during the initial stages.

Desirable Attributes:

Entrepreneurial mindset with a strong desire to build something from the ground up. Experience in recruiting or a strong desire to take on hiring responsibilities as the team expands. Strong business development and networking abilities, with the drive to bring in new clients and grow the firm. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build relationships at all levels and inspire confidence in clients and potential hires.

Compensation & Rewards:

Base Salary: Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications. Performance-Based Rewards: Your compensation will be tied to KPIs for new client acquisition and overall business growth. You will be rewarded with structured incentives for successfully meeting targets related to client engagement, revenue generation, and firm expansion. Equity Potential: As a Small Business Partner, you will have the opportunity to earn equity in the firm as part of our long-term growth strategy. Career Development: Clear pathways for personal and professional development as the firm grows. Home Working: Flexibility to work remotely for the next 9-12 months. Strategic Growth: Play a central role in the firm's expansion, including finding a new office location and leading the transition as the team and client base grow. Collaborative Environment: Join a dynamic and supportive team environment, where your contributions will directly shape the future of the practice.

How to Apply:

If you're an experienced accountant with a passion for growth, leadership, and business development, we'd love to hear from you. Please submit your CV along with a cover letter outlining your relevant experience, why you're interested in becoming a Small Business Partner, and how you can contribute to the firm's success.
