Key Responsibilities
Dispensing & Patient Care
Accurately dispense medications as prescribed, maintaining precise records.
Ensure correct labelling, dosages, quantities, and any additional patient information.
Adhere to Practice policies for medication handling, including controlled or expensive drugs.
Manage stock levels, check expiry dates, and maintain dispensary equipment.
Place orders with suppliers and unpack deliveries efficiently.
Administration & Systems
Record all relevant information on
SystmOne
clinical system.
Endorse prescriptions accurately and check pricing with suppliers.
Safely dispose of returned or expired medications.
Maintain dispensary and NHS stationery stock.
Issue prescriptions to patients efficiently, including repeats.
Patient Interaction (Ad-hoc)
Provide guidance on medication, dosage, exemptions, and pre-payment certificates.
Assist patients in completing forms accurately and collect prescription fees.
Schedule appointments and log patient arrivals when required.
Health, Safety & Security
Follow Health & Safety and COSHH regulations to maintain a safe dispensary environment.
Ensure security and integrity of medications and dispensary equipment.
Communication & Teamwork
Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, suppliers, and external agencies.
Respond to drug safety alerts and quality notices promptly.
Build strong working relationships across the practice and wider healthcare teams.
Stock Control & Prescriptions
Maintain adequate medicine and container stock levels.
Rotate stock and check for expired medications.
Ensure prescriptions are provided accurately and on time.
Conduct regular checks of dispensed baskets and log errors.
Continuous Improvement
Follow dispensary SOPs and legal requirements at all times.
Contribute to process updates, team effectiveness, and workplace safety.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR standards.
Attend training and cover colleagues as needed during absences.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
NVQ Level 2 in Dispensing (or equivalent) with at least
2 years dispensing experience
.
Experience delivering high-quality service in a
busy, patient-focused environment
.
Methodical, detail-oriented, and numerate.
Knowledge of medicines and clinical procedures, including DSQS standards.
Excellent written, verbal communication, and teamwork skills.
Ability to use initiative, problem-solve, and work independently.
Confident with email, Word, Excel, and ideally SystmOne.
Positive, flexible, and proactive attitude.
Two satisfactory employment references, one from your current employer.
Desirable
Experience in
general practice/healthcare setting.
Familiarity with SystmOne clinical system.
