To provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to the registered patient population of the GP surgery. The Practice Nurse plays a key role in health promotion, disease prevention, and the management of long-term conditions, working collaboratively with GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Healthcare Assistants, and administrative staff to deliver holistic patient care.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Care
Deliver general treatment room nursing, including wound care, dressings, suture removal, ear care, ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, and phlebotomy.
Administer adult and childhood immunisations and vaccinations, including seasonal flu and travel vaccines, in line with national guidance.
Perform cervical cytology screening in accordance with NHS Cervical Screening Programme standards.
Support patients with long-term condition management, such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, following clinical protocols and national guidelines (e.g. NICE, QOF).
Participate in health screening and recall systems for chronic disease reviews, smears, and immunisations.
Provide travel health advice and vaccinations (where trained and qualified).
Ensure infection prevention and control policies are maintained to CQC and NHS England standards.
Undertake new patient checks, NHS health checks, and other preventative health assessments.
Support minor illness and injury consultations within competence and agreed protocols.
Health Promotion and Education
Provide lifestyle advice on smoking cessation, weight management, diet, exercise, alcohol, and stress management.
Promote patient self-management and empower individuals to take an active role in their own health.
Participate in public health initiatives and national screening programmes.
Professional Responsibilities
Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care.
Participate in clinical audit, significant event analysis, and contribute to achieving QOF and enhanced service targets.
Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge through continuing professional development (CPD) and mandatory training.
Ensure compliance with NMC Code of Conduct, local safeguarding procedures, and confidentiality requirements (Data Protection / GDPR).
Attend practice meetings and contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate, legible, and contemporaneous patient records using the clinical system (e.g. EMIS, SystmOne).
Administrative and Organisational Duties
Manage stock control of vaccines, medications, and clinical supplies.
Ensure treatment rooms and clinical areas are clean, safe, and compliant with infection control standards.
Participate in the organisation and delivery of health promotion clinics and seasonal vaccination programmes.
Support the recall and follow-up of patients for chronic disease reviews, screening, and immunisations.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
Registered Nurse (NMC Registration).
Experience in general practice or primary care.
Evidence of recent clinical CPD.
Competence in immunisations, wound care, and cervical screening (if qualified).
Desirable:
Additional qualifications in chronic disease management (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes).
Experience with EMIS or SystmOne.
Mentorship or teaching qualification.
Skills and Attributes
