Medicana Winchester Hospital is seeking a dynamic and experienced Pre-assessment Nurse to join our high-performing clinical team. The post holder will be responsible for the comprehensive assessment of patients ahead of planned surgical or diagnostic procedures, ensuring they are medically fit for surgery and that all necessary preparations are in place for a safe and smooth admission and discharge process.
You will play a pivotal role in delivering a seamless, patient-centred pre-operative pathway, working closely with Consultants, Anaesthetists, Operating Department staff, and administrative teams to coordinate high-quality care.
In addition to their core pre-assessment duties, the post holder will also contribute to the Outpatient Department operational and clinical requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Conduct detailed pre-operative assessments, including full medical history, medication review, risk stratification, and documentation.
Perform physical examinations and appropriate baseline observations (BP, pulse, O2 sats, BMI, ECGs, bloods, MRSA screening, etc.).
Identify patients requiring further investigation or anaesthetic review, escalating appropriately.
Ensure pre-assessment clinics are delivered in line with best practice, clinical standards, and local protocols.
Support patient understanding of the pre- and post-operative pathway, providing clear education and reassurance.
Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation in line with current regulations and hospital policies.
Contribute to ongoing review and improvement of pre-assessment protocols and pathways.
Assist as required in the Outpatient Department collaborating with the Consultants and Allied Health Professionals for the delivery of high-quality care.
Lead and participate in other operational and clinical duties within the Outpatient Department (stock ordering, auditing, decontamination of equipment, etc)
Professional and Governance Duties
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national guidance (e.g., NICE, RCoA, ASA, GIRFT guidelines).
Participate in audit, quality improvement, and clinical effectiveness initiatives within the Outpatient department.
Actively contribute to departmental meetings and multi-disciplinary team discussions.
Adhere to infection prevention and control standards and support best practice at all times.
Team and Communication
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals.
Liaise with external providers (e.g., GPs, Local NHS Trusts, etc) when required to gather relevant patient information or test results.
Participate in team training and service development initiatives.
