Pre Sales Engineer

Birmingham, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

About BPE Audio

BPE Audio is an acoustic consultancy and audio installation specialist delivering beautifully discreet, high?performance systems for bars, restaurants, clubs, hotels and premium residential spaces. We design for musicality, intelligibility and compliance often in heritage buildings and live trading venues using platforms such as Q?SYS, Dante/AES67, and premium loudspeaker lines (L?Acoustics, Martin Audio, Sonos Architectural). Many projects integrate PTZ cameras, conferencing and control to create seamless guest and staff experiences.

The Role

We're hiring a Pre?Sales Engineer to shape winning solutions from first conversation to signed contract. You'll partner with Sales and Engineering to translate client outcomes into robust designs, clear proposals and credible delivery plans. Expect a mix of discovery workshops, surveys, concept designs, coverage modelling, BoMs/quotes and persuasive presentations plus hands?on demos where needed.

This role suits a technically strong communicator who enjoys client time, problem?solving and value?engineering without compromising reliability.

What you'll do

Discovery & Solution Design

Lead requirements capture (acoustic/AV needs, operational constraints, aesthetics, budget).

Conduct site surveys; document risks/assumptions; propose phasing for live venues.

Produce concept and developed designs: schematics, loudspeaker layouts, rack concepts, control UI/UX outlines, and IP/network topologies.

Model coverage/levels as needed (EASE/EASE Focus); sense?check isolation/noise constraints with our consultants.

Architect Q?SYS DSP/control and Dante networks (QoS/VLANs/clocking) with secure remote access in mind.

Commercials & Proposal Writing

Build clear Scopes of Work, BoMs and options; justify choices and trade?offs.

Prepare quotes and written proposals with visuals, method statements and acceptance criteria.

Value?engineer alternatives; present TCO/ROI narratives appropriate to hospitality owners/operators.

Support tenders/RFPs: responses, compliance matrices, programme outlines, and preliminaries (RAMS/CDM considerations).

Demos, Samples & Proofs?of?Concept

Plan and run demonstrations, listening sessions and small POCs; coordinate demo stock and vendor support.

Create comparison frameworks (SPL/coverage/price) and capture client feedback for revisions.

Handover to Delivery

Run a structured pre?contract review: risks, exclusions, programme, provisional sums, and client responsibilities.

Produce a tidy Pre?Sales Pack (marked?up drawings, BoM, SoW, assumptions, acceptance tests) for Project Management and Engineering.

Support early?phase design reviews; stay available for key clarifications.

Enablement & Continuous Improvement

Maintain templates: proposals, schematics, coverage exhibits, training decks.

Track win/loss reasons; feed service issues back into design standards (design?for?support).

Nurture vendor relationships; keep abreast of product roadmaps and pricing.

What you'll bring

Essential

3-7+ years in installed audio/AV pre?sales, solutions engineering, or design/commissioning with strong client?facing experience.

Solid audio systems knowledge (loudspeakers, amplification, DSP, control) and practical Q?SYS/Dante competence.

Ability to read architectural/MEP drawings; produce/redline concept schematics and layouts (AutoCAD/Visio).

Working knowledge of IP networking for AV (subnets, VLANs, PoE, QoS/clocking basics).

Clear written proposals, visual communication and confident presentations to mixed technical/non?technical audiences.

Commercial awareness: margins, options, value engineering, scope/assumption management.

Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK; willing to travel and attend evening demos when needed.

Nice to have

Tools/certs: EASE/EASE Focus, Smaart, Q?SYS L1/L2, Dante L2/L3, Bluebeam, Revit literacy.

Experience in hospitality/heritage venues; awareness of UK noise guidance (e.g., BS 4142/8233) and typical planning constraints.

Familiarity with L?Acoustics, Martin Audio, RCF, d&b, Yamaha, Shure, Biamp.

Procurement/tender experience and basic programme planning (Smartsheet/MS Project).

Public speaking, live demos and running client workshops.

What success looks like

In 90 days: pipeline mapped; proposal and drawing templates refreshed; first wins supported with clear SoW/BoMs.

In 6 months: improved win rate and faster proposal cycle; fewer change orders due to clearer assumptions.

In 12 months: a repeatable pre?sales playbook; vendor?supported demo programme; strong client references.

KPIs (examples)

Qualified win rate and average margin at contract signature.

Proposal cycle time and RFI turnaround.

BoM accuracy vs. actuals; change orders attributable to pre?sales assumptions.

Demo?to?close conversion; client satisfaction/NPS at handover.

Template adoption and documentation completeness.

How we work

Quality first: clear designs, honest specs, predictable outcomes.

Pragmatic and tidy: site?aware solutions, minimal disruption for trading venues.

Growth mindset: funded training/certifications and time for product learning.

What we offer

Competitive salary + performance bonus.

25 days holiday + UK bank holidays; pension scheme.

Training & certifications (Q?SYS, Dante, Smaart, EASE and vendor courses).

Laptop, measurement tools access, software licences; travel expenses.

Hybrid working once established; client/site visits as required.

Schedule & travel

Monday-Friday with occasional evenings/weekends for demos or cutovers.

Projects mainly London & South East; occasional UK travel.
