Overview
Our client is a growing, award-winning consultancy providing tailored and engineering solutions to large public entities and Tier 1 contractors, specialising in sustainable transport infrastructure and power and energy projects.
They are seeking a Principal Civil/Structural Engineer to join their vibrant and diverse team to deliver civil and structural engineering designs that are innovative, sustainable and intelligent, meeting fee and client budgets whilst exceeding all stakeholder expectations, and within a warm, friendly work environment.
Responsibilities
Engineer Responsibilities
Deliver innovative, sustainable, and safe structural solutions across all project stages.
Manage junior engineers and technicians to produce accurate, coordinated project documentation on time and budget.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and ensure design stability during construction and final conditions.
Conduct regular design reviews and ensure independent checks before issue.
Maintain Health & Safety compliance and CDM risk registers.
Prepare physical or digital models and oversee site investigations.
Uphold high standards of presentation in all outputs.
Deputise for the Director when required.
People Management
Supervise and mentor junior staff, manage workflow and deadlines.
Monitor resource needs and highlight improvements to the Director.
Ensure accurate timesheets and adherence to office systems.
Fees & Invoicing
Prepare competitive fee proposals and secure written appointments.
Track scope changes and agree additional fees before work starts.
Maintain project records and prepare accurate monthly invoices.
Marketing
Build strong client relationships and promote the company.
Attend industry events and assist with marketing materials.
Communication
Liaise with clients and design teams for integrated solutions.
Maintain proactive communication and attend meetings with accurate notes.
Training
Share knowledge, maintain CPD, and meet IStructE/ICE requirements.
Requirements
Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's Desirable)
Membership of a relevant professional body (ICE or IStructE) or near chartered is desirable
Minimum of 8 years' relevant background in a design consultancy
8 years' executing, leading and managing the design of projects within energy/infrastructure sectors
4+ years' of managing a team of engineers and technicians and evidence of developing their skills and knowledge
Strong analytical and design skills with the ability to interpret design requirements and analyse complex structures
Knowledge and expertise of design analysis software; a high level of computer literacy.
Producing simple, clear calculations and drawings
Strong health and safety management experience including management and maintenance of CDM Risk Registers
An adaptable and flexible working style with the ability to develop and foster collaborative working relationships
Mentoring and coaching junior engineers and technicians
Preparing bid proposals
Monitoring compliance with design, statutory professional requirements
Attending design review and constructability meetings with clients including Tier One/Principal Contractors as well as national and local authorities.
Ability to represent the company on site visits/surveys (sometimes in unsociable hours) in a professional manner.
Desirable: background in effective financial management and control of projects
