Job overview The Nuclear Medicine Section comprises approximately 40 individuals working between two sites (Queen\xe2\x80\x99s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital) and operates 4 SPECT/CT gamma cameras, 4 bone densitometers, networked HERMES workstations and a radio pharmacy service. The service also manages the Nottingham PET/CT Centre. The Nuclear Medicine clinics perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging and non-imaging investigations (these include nuclear cardiology, oncology, paediatrics, gastroenterology and orthopaedics) and also provide a growing molecular radionuclide therapy service . The Bone Densitometry Clinic performs a full range of bone densitometry investigations on behalf of various specialties within the Trust and for GPs, and is part of a fracture liaison service for the assessment and treatment of older patients with low trauma fractures.
Main duties of the job The post holder will be a member of a team of 6 scientists providing comprehensive scientific support to the Nuclear Medicine service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and external customers, including the Nottingham PET/CT Centre. They will be expected to act as a Medical Physics Expert and support the delivery of safe and efficient services. The role will involve contributions to all scientific aspects of the service including supporting a wide range of clinical procedures (diagnostic and therapeutic), radiopharmacy, performance and analysis of quality assurance tests, teaching and maintenance of the quality management system. The post holder will undertake activities at both Nottingham City Hospital and QMC, and will be required to travel to the sites of external customers as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities The main duties of the role will include: Patient/Client care
Act as Medical Physics Expert in Nuclear Medicine, providing expert scientific and technical advice to other health professionals on the justification, optimisation, analysis and interpretation of investigations, the safe use of equipment, and the development of new techniques and staff training. Be responsible for the effective and safe provision of the Molecular Radionuclide Therapy clinical service or PET/CT scientific support. Be responsible for providing scientific support to the Nuclear Medicine Clinic according to the duty physicist rota and at other times as required. Policy & Service Development
Be responsible for the development, implementation and review of individual procedures within the Quality Management System for the section. As a Medical Physics Expert determine the most appropriate methods for patient treatments or for acquiring, analysing and presenting the results from patient investigations, taking account of published best practice, national guidance and statutory regulations. Contribute to the maintenance of statistical information as required for audit, clinical governance and management purposes.
Resource Management
Take on line management responsibilities for junior staff. Advise on the suitability of equipment for specific tasks within the Nuclear Medicine Clinic and the need for loan or replacement equipment. In collaboration with scientific, clinical and technical colleagues specify and select major equipment (gamma cameras value \xc2\xa31,000,000, computer systems) for use in the clinic. Assist with the development and performance of acceptance tests on this equipment to ensure that it meets its specification and is safe to use with patients. Teaching, Training and Research
Supervise trainee clinical scientists on placements in the section.
Train Medical Physics staff in Nuclear Medicine with particular responsibility for MRT. Provide training to other groups of healthcare professionals within the Trust and other organisations (including FRCR and IRMER lectures). Initiate and participate in research and innovation in Nuclear Medicine and in other Trust and academic departments as agreed with the Head of the Section. Analyse and interpret the results from research and development studies for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals. Professional
Maintain continuing professional development to standards defined by the relevant professional and regulatory bodies and maintain registration as a Clinical Scientist. Ensure all activities are carried out within the ISO quality framework and conform to Statutory Regulations, Approved Codes of Practice and Local Rules. Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific developments and their applications in medical and associated fields as part of training and personal development and to further the work of the section. Experience
Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience commensurate with acting as MPE in nuclear medicine
  • Able to analyse a wide range of nuclear medicine investigations
  • In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines.

Desirable criteria
  • Expert knowledge and practical experience of molecular radionuclide therapy
  • Expert knowledge and practical experience of PET/CT
  • Experience of staff management or team leadership

Training & Qualification
Essential criteria
  • Successful completion of STP scheme or equivalent
  • HCPC registered Clinical Scientist
