We're looking for an experienced and driven Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems to lead the design and development of electrical systems for current and future Gordon Murray vehicles. This role will provide technical leadership across system design, model-based development, and supplier engagement, ensuring delivery to quality, cost, performance, and legislative standards.

You'll lead a team of systems engineers, govern tools and methodologies, manage system-level verification (including ISO 26262), and support cross-functional activities with procurement, logistics, and quality. A strong background in model-based systems engineering (MBSE), automotive electrical architecture, and functional safety is essential.

Key Responsibilities





Provide engineering leadership for the design and development of electrical systems for current and future Gordon Murray vehicles. Lead a team of systems engineers in the model-based design and development of vehicle electrical systems across domains, ensuring functional content, performance, weight, cost, and packaging requirements are met. Ensure a methodical, process-driven approach to systems engineering, with responsibility for governing processes, methodologies, and tools. Define technical work packages and feature implementation plans for the team, ensuring alignment with project and vehicle development plans. Supervise and guide the development of systems to meet environmental, electrical performance, EMC, packaging, functional safety, and relevant certification or legislative requirements. Take overall responsibility for electrical systems design artefacts provided to Tier 1 suppliers and technical partners. Lead or contribute to system reviews, verification and validation activities, including FMEAs, Design Verification Planning, ISO 26262 functional safety assessments, and related development lifecycle tasks. Lead the supplier nomination process from a technical perspective and prepare or approve the Electrical System Requirements sections of RFQ documentation. Represent Electrical Systems at all levels of the business. Support, in conjunction with the Chief Engineer, the resourcing of the Electrical Systems team to levels agreed with senior management. Support Tier 1 supplier management and coordination, including Procurement, Logistics, and Quality, throughout the project lifecycle.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise





Proven track record of leadership and delivery of electrical systems at Principal Engineer level (or Senior Engineer with significant experience) in the automotive or aerospace industry. Significant experience in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is essential. A working knowledge of Obeo Designer for Systems Engineering and its associated metamodels is highly desirable. In-depth, expert understanding of automotive electrical systems, software features and functions, electrical architectures, and systems integration. Working knowledge of CAN, automotive Ethernet, LIN networks, and vehicle diagnostics. Experience with multi-party project engineering, including risk management, mitigation, and recovery planning. Familiarity with system/component delivery within APQP, Six Sigma, or similar quality frameworks (e.g. FMEA, quality planning, PPAP). Articulate, self-motivated, and inspiring individual who performs well under pressure. Demonstrates resilience and builds strong working relationships at all levels of the organisation. Possession of a degree in Electronics, Control Systems, Automotive Engineering, or a related field. Other recognised engineering qualifications combined with significant relevant experience will be considered. Full driving licence required.
