Are you an experienced Highways Engineer with a passion for shaping the future of our road networks and influencing sustainable urban development?
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Section 38 and 278 Team as a Principal Engineer at a time of great investment and regeneration for the district.
We are seeking a dedicated Principal Highways Development Management Engineer to join our team, where you will play a critical role in leading and guiding our Highways Development Management Team. This is a unique opportunity to drive impactful highways planning initiatives and contribute to the successful delivery of strategic projects within our community, assisting the Planning Team in the assessment of planning submissions and ensuring compliance with the local and national standards.
Key Responsibilities
As the Principal Highways Development Management Engineer, you will:

  • Lead a Team of Engineers: Provide direction, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to a team of engineers responsible for highways development management, ensuring high standards and efficiency across projects.
  • Oversee Development Proposals: Review, assess, and influence planning applications to ensure they align with highways policies and sustainable transport objectives.
  • Engage with Stakeholders: Work closely with developers, planners, council members, and other stakeholders to provide expert highways guidance, ensuring that all developments support the growth and safety of our communities.
  • Attend Planning Committees: Represent the Highways department at Planning Committee meetings, clearly communicating technical assessments, addressing inquiries, and advocating for high standards in highways and transportation planning.
  • Promote Best Practices: Ensure that all submissions comply with relevant highways standards and regulatory frameworks, driving continuous improvement and innovation in the way we manage highways infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with Strategic Planning Teams: Collaborate with other departments to align development management activities with broader strategic goals and infrastructure initiatives.
This role is based in the Wakefield One building in Wakefield City Centre at a time of exciting change and renovation across the city. As a member of the wider Regeneration and Economic Growth team you will be at the forefront of these historic projects.
