Technology & Information Function Overview

We have recently merged our separate technology and business intelligence teams to form a Technology & Information Group (TIG), led by our first Chief Information Officer. We have invested heavily in our infrastructure and technology capability, enabling us to deliver innovative solutions and deep insight market intelligence to our clients. Through harnessing the latest tools and technology, we allow the business to work faster, more intelligently and we are uncovering more and more business opportunities as a result. We are also continuing to build a world-class product team which will help take Third Bridge to the next level, and beyond.

Principal Engineers are the senior technical team members in the company, and the role is critical to the successful delivery of technology solutions to support the various Third Bridge customer-facing business units. They will work collaboratively with product owners, business analysts and other team members and will be ultimately accountable for delivering high-quality technology solutions - built and bought - to support the commercial objectives of those businesses. In conjunction with architects and other technical stakeholders, they will make decisions on technology choices at system and component level, ensuring that the team takes into account the full lifecycle from selection to support. They are happy to innovate and try things out, and champion new technologies, tools and approaches within the team. They have significant experience in successfully designing, building and operating systems in complex business domains and are by nature problem solvers and think deeply about getting things done in the right way for a given context.

Principal Engineers lead varying teams of engineers to design, develop, test, deploy and support solutions. As seasoned experts, they will provide hands-on leadership by example, delivering code, tests, documentation and other artefacts alongside the members of their teams. They will provide day to day mentoring and support to the engineers that they work with, challenging and guiding their work as necessary. They will work with the Head of Engineering to support the personal and professional development of the team to ensure that it is able to deliver their best work and are able to grow and mature their skills and experience by working at Third Bridge. They should act as a role model for other engineers, both in terms of knowledge and behaviours. They are pragmatic, understand risk and are able to make balanced choices.

They will encourage networking across the whole of Third Bridge and in the wider technical community. When necessary they will work with trusted third parties to design, build and deliver technical solutions. They communicate effectively, can build relationships well, and are able to deliver difficult messages sensitively when necessary.

Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

Working with product owners, business analysts and others to ensure that business requirements are understood to the level necessary to deliver effective technical solutions

Leading team of engineers in designing, developing and releasing software components and associated artefacts - tests, documentation, run books and so on to agreed timescale and quality standards

Working with other stakeholders to make system and component level technology choices, to champion those choices and support team members to ensure that they are able to deliver solutions effectively

To investigate new technologies, tools and processes that might bring advantages to Third Bridge, leading proof of concept exercises where necessary

Providing mentoring to team members as requested and required, advising on best practices, application of standards, appropriate implementation choices, communications and approach/style questions

Ensuring solutions delivered are complete, consistent, meet all required quality standards, and delivers functional and non-functional outcomes as agreed

By example, fostering a collaborative environment, and actively motivate the team to work together in an efficient manner, and share lessons learned

Liaising with internal and external suppliers in order to ensure solutions are delivered to time and quality, and are performant and supportable

Ensuring that tools and processes are in place to support team operations and that team operational processes cover on boarding of new team members, as and when necessary

Qualifications

Demonstrable ability to write code, tests, documentation and other artefacts necessary to deliver solutions to time, quality and budget constraints

Demonstrate wide experience in technical solution delivery and engineering leadership, ideally across several business sectors and in organizations of comparable size and complexity to Third Bridge

Provide evidence of ability to understand complex business environments and processes and to work effectively with business stakeholders to design technical solutions to deliver appropriate outcomes

Demonstrable ability to manage, mentor, build and get the best from small and varying teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds, skills and levels of experience

Demonstrable ability to build trust and relationships at all levels within and outside an organization like Third Bridge, providing evidence of ability to manage conflict and achieve positive outcomes - e.g. team or client/supplier conflict as necessary

Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a team and multiple workloads, working calmly under pressure

Demonstrate prior experience of putting in place the tools, processes and culture required for a successful world class Engineering team - particularly in introducing automation and efficient delivery workflows

Demonstrate high levels of expertise in one or more of the core technology areas for Third Bridge - currently examples including PHP, JavaScript, AWS environments, DevOps automation, QA automation - and show evidence of successfully introducing new tools and technologies for competitive advantage in the past
