Job Overview
Our client is a well-established
fire safety engineering and fire strategy consultancy
, providing specialist
fire safety engineering, regulatory fire strategy and building safety advisory services
across complex and higher-risk buildings throughout the UK.
Due to continued growth and an increasing portfolio of
regulator-facing and higher-risk projects
, they are seeking to appoint a
Principal Fire Safety Engineer
to provide senior technical leadership, strategic fire safety input and oversight of complex fire strategy delivery.
This role is suited to an experienced
fire safety engineer
with strong expertise in
fire strategy, performance-based fire safety design and UK fire safety regulation
, who is comfortable leading projects, advising clients and engaging directly with regulators.
This is a
UK-based remote hybrid role
. Applicants must be based in the UK and able to attend key client, design team and regulatory meetings as required.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and delivery of
fire safety strategies
from early concept through detailed design, construction and handover, including
performance-based fire safety solutions
where appropriate.
Undertake, review and technically sign off complex
fire safety engineering analyses
, including means of escape, smoke control strategy, fire and smoke spread assessments, CFD and evacuation modelling, and structural fire safety assessments.
Provide senior-level
fire safety and regulatory advisory input
on complex and higher-risk buildings, including Gateway submissions and engagement with Building Control and approval authorities.
Act as the lead fire safety engineering representative at client meetings, design team workshops, regulator meetings and technical reviews.
Oversee multiple fire safety engineering projects, managing
scope, programme, fees, risk and quality
, including preparation of fee proposals, technical scopes and variations.
Mentor, supervise and technically review the work of graduate, intermediate and senior fire safety engineers, supporting professional development and progression towards chartership.
Contribute to the continued growth and reputation of the consultancy through strong client relationships, repeat work and technical leadership.
Skills & Technical Competence
Deep understanding of
UK fire safety legislation and guidance
, including Building Regulations, Approved Document B, BS 9991, BS 9999 and associated standards.
Strong experience developing, reviewing and defending
fire safety strategies
that withstand scrutiny from regulators, insurers and third-party reviewers.
Experience with
fire and smoke modelling
,
evacuation modelling
and/or
structural fire safety analysis
, or strong capability to critically review and interpret modelling outputs produced by others.
Proven ability to develop
performance-based fire safety solutions
, including equivalence arguments and qualitative or quantitative risk assessments.
High standard of written communication, capable of producing and peer-reviewing
fire safety engineering reports, technical notes and regulatory submissions
.
Experience & Qualifications
Typically
8-12+ years' experience
in
fire safety engineering and fire strategy consultancy
, with significant involvement in complex and higher-risk projects.
Degree in Fire Engineering, Fire Safety Engineering or a related engineering discipline (e.g. structural or mechanical), with a postgraduate fire safety or fire engineering specialism preferred.
Chartered or working towards
IEng or CEng
(via IFE, CIBSE, EI or similar), often acting as a technical reviewer or mentor for other engineers.
Demonstrable track record leading
fire safety strategy development and coordination
across multiple RIBA stages and building sectors.
Salary & Benefits
75,000 - 105,000 per annum
