About the role
Barnet is setting up a new Selective Licensing Scheme in three wards requiring landlords to license their private rented properties. We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable Principal Housing Enforcement Officer to join our Housing Regulatory Services with a focus on being the lead Enforcement Officer for Selective Licensing. This is a vital role focused on improving housing conditions and ensuring compliance with housing legislation in the most deprived parts of the borough. As a Principal Officer you will assist the Team Manager in setting up this new team, work on complex housing enforcement cases and play a key part in training up less experienced staff. You'll work closely with landlords, tenants, and partner agencies to protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents.

About you
We are looking for candidates who have demonstrable technical knowledge of Housing Regulatory Services and extensive experience in taking enforcement action in particular in relation to Part 1-3 of the Housing Act 2004.
If you are keen to be involved in the establishment of a new enforcement initiative and enjoy helping less experienced officers to develop this will be an ideal opportunity for you.
Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills are required, along with the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with a wide range of contacts. Applicants must also be capable of handling difficult or complex issues and drafting legal documents accurately.
The successful candidate will be a competent user of Microsoft Office applications and they should be able to accurately record data using specialist data management systems.
We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, able to work under pressure, and capable of meeting deadlines and targets while maintaining a high standard of work. The role requires adaptability, a flexible attitude, and the ability to adjust to changes in tasks at short notice. Candidates must also be able to progress complex cases in a timely and accurate manner, in accordance with relevant legislation and guidelines.
