Job Summary




As Principal Investigator in Genomics and Bioinformatics, you will lead NHSBT's scientific research and innovation agenda across genomics, bioinformatics and data science. You will play a pivotal role in advancing NHSBT's research strategy, ensuring that novel approaches are developed, validated and implemented to improve patient outcomes and strengthen NHSBT's contribution to the wider NHS. This senior position requires a balance of high level scientific expertise, leadership and collaborative skills to influence national and international developments in the field. You will be expected to secure funding, manage research programmes and teams and act as a key spokesperson for NHSBT in these areas.

Main duties of the job




In this role you will be a

Principal Investigator Genomics & Bioinformatics

responsible for providing scientific leadership within NHSBT in the fields of genomics, bioinformatics and data science. Responsibilities include:

Ensuring the research, development and implementation of innovative, evidence-based approaches. Developing a robust portfolio of research by securing internal and external funding, aligned with NHSBT's strategic priorities in genomics, bioinformatics, and data science. Representing NHSBT at national and international levels, shaping policy, fostering collaboration and promoting excellence in research and clinical translation. Providing leadership for the development of guidelines and best practice within several areas including bioinformatics, genotyping, evaluation of full blood counts and allocation of blood products, NHSBT and the NHS. Communicating complex research findings clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences including stakeholders, peers, patients and the public Building and strengthening collaborations with healthcare providers, academic institutions and industry partners to support the effective delivery of translational research. Managing staff, budgets, and operational resources necessary for achieving the strategic objectives of the research programme. Contributing to the professional and personal development of scientific staff, students, trainees, clinicians and researchers through teaching, training and mentoring.
You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice

You will be required to participate in the shift rota and on call rotas and to provide cover during operational emergencies

About You



Experience and Knowledge



Proficient in the use of Microsoft office applications to prepare written and oral presentations (e.g. PowerPoint presentations, word documents), design and manipulate excel spread sheets to analyse and present data. Demonstratable ability to program novel bespoke bioinformatic solutions using modern object orientated scripting languages (eg. Python, Ruby, Scala etc.) Excellent skills in coding, programming, mathematical modelling, database construction and how to apply these skills to clinical genomics Experience of analysis, interpretation and data visualisation of highly complex genomic and biological data Experience of leading, managing and developing teams, and educating junior members of staff PhD level scientific knowledge in human clinical genetics and bioinformatics Experience of leading the development of guidelines and best practice Proven experience of working in UNIX/LINUX and BASH scripting Extensive track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals Track record of successful applications for external funding Experience of working within an academic environment Knowledge and understanding of research governance Experience of co-ordinating multiple research projects Experience in software engineering Experience of managing budgets

Qualifications and Training



PhD and significant postdoctoral experience in bioinformatics of clinical genomics Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
