The Moredun Research Institute is a world-class centre of excellence for the research and development of animal health and disease. Our mission is to improve animal health, welfare, and production through cutting-edge scientific research and we achieve this by developing novel vaccines, diagnostic tests and disease control strategies for the control of livestock disease. We are now seeking a new Principal Investigator with expertise in Molecular Bacteriology to join our team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a talented molecular bacteriologist to lead and develop a cutting-edge research programme on bacterial diseases of livestock. You will play a key role in advancing our strategic mission by:
Research Leadership:
Develop and lead a cutting-edge research programme focused on the control of bacterial diseases in livestock
Project Delivery:
Ensure the successful delivery of research objectives within the Scottish Government-funded Strategic Research Programme (SRP, 2022-2027) whilst developing research projects for the next round of SRP funding (2027-2032)
Team Management:
Lead and manage support staff and students, providing guidance, mentorship and leadership to ensure the achievement of research goals
External Funding:
Build and expand research networks to attract significant levels of external funding from a diverse range of funding bodies and industry partners
Stakeholder Engagement:
Foster strong relationships with key stakeholder groups, industry partners and end-users to facilitate knowledge exchange and the transfer of innovative research outcomes into practical applications
Experience required
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a proven track record in bacterial disease research. You should be able to demonstrate scientific excellence, leadership and an ability to build collaborations within the UK and internationally.
Essential qualifications and experience:
A PhD in a relevant field (i.e. epidemiology of bacterial diseases of livestock or molecular bacteriology)
Proven track record of successfully managing and leading research teams, with experience in epidemiology and control of bacterial pathogens in livestock
A proven record of scientific project design, management, and delivery
Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and inspire a team of researchers and student
An excellent publication record, demonstrating clear impact for research outcomes
A demonstrated ability to secure significant external funding from diverse sources, including government, charitable, and industry partners
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Experience in engaging with stakeholders, with a passion for translating research findings into practical applications for industry
Desirable attributes:
Degree in Veterinary Medicine
Experience with bacterial genomic sequencing, phylogenomic or phylodynamic analyses
Research experience in UK-endemic livestock pathogens
Active research network both nationally and globally
Home Office Personal and/or Project Licence
