Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, energetic and capable Principal HIV/STI Surveillance and Prevention Scientist to join the Blood Safety, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infection and HIV Division of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Postholder will be based in HIV Section and will oversee implementation, data collection, analyses and dissemination of findings for Positive Voices national survey conducted in 2022 and planned for 2026. These findings are crucial for informing delivery and implementation of the HIV Action Plan. A specialism in mixed methodology research and behavioural science would be an asset. The postholder will develop and implement statistical analyses and metrics and use mixed methodologies to lead on research, evaluate the impact of responsive health protection measures, and will prepare surveillance outputs, scientific reports and articles. Additional responsibilities in overseeing HIV testing can be considered.
Job description
The postholders will manage a team of senior scientists and executive officers.
Day to day activities would include data analyses, report writing, research design and implementation, ensuring resources are available to conduct the survey, liaison with academic partners etc.
The postholders will lead on behalf of the department on developing and designing survey, managing the collation and validation of data, and the timely production of outputs (e.g. reports and articles).
The postholder would be expected to work with a range of stakeholders on a daily basis, chair multi-stakeholders meetings and communicate findings using presentations, reports, briefings and conference abstracts etc.;
The postholders will contribute to the teaching activities of the department.

Qualifications
:
Degree in relevant scientific subject (e.g. public health, behavioural science, data science) or significant experience of working at a similar level in HIV/sexual health field
PhD or equivalent experience in public health, epidemiology, health promotion, health-care research or similar
Training in research methods, infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, behavioural surveys, prevention and/or public health
Knowledge and experience:
Experience of leading, developing, designing and implementing new scientific initiatives including behavioural surveys
Knowledge of HIV/STI/BBV surveillance and epidemiology
Experience of working at a senior level with responsibility for multiple projects
Experience of using computers and database software packages (particularly Stata, Microsoft ACCESS and Excel)
Experience of advanced epidemiological and statistical research and qualitative methods (i.e. post-doctoral level)
Experience of project management - planning, monitoring and controlling single or multi-disciplinary project groups
Experience of preparing scientific reports and presentations
Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
Experience of staff management
Experience of working at a senior level with responsibility for multiple project

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Core HQ in Colindale, London. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month). Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport link and benefit from benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC)
If based at one of our scientific campuses, you will be required to have a minimum of a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.
