Windeatts Solicitors LLP is a leading legal services provider across the South Devon area, with offices in both Totnes and Kingsbridge, Devon. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional legal advice and representation, with a strong focus on Private Client work.

Summary



The Private Client Solicitor will be responsible for delivering a high-quality legal service to clients across all areas of Private Client work. The role includes advising on and managing matters such as wills, probate, trusts, estate administration, powers of attorney, tax and succession planning, and Court of Protection applications. The post holder will be expected to work in compliance with professional and regulatory requirements, contribute to the growth and development of the department and wider firm, participate in business development activities, and supervise or mentor junior members of staff as required.

Key Responsibilities



Client Service & Casework



Advise clients on all aspects of private client law, including wills, probate, estate planning, trusts, powers of attorney, tax and succession planning, and Court of Protection matters. Manage your own caseload independently while assisting other fee-earners and partners where required. Deliver timely, proactive, and practical advice tailored to clients' needs. Keep clients informed of progress, costs, and options, ensuring excellent client care and satisfaction.

Compliance & Risk Management



Work in accordance with the firm's procedures, policies, and quality standards. Ensure compliance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Code of Conduct and other relevant regulatory obligations. Maintain accurate and compliant file management, billing, credit control, client due diligence, and time recording on our case management system LEAP. Support the firm in achieving Lexcel or other quality accreditations as applicable.

Business Development & Growth



Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, referrers, and the local community. Contribute to marketing, networking, and business development activities to promote the firm and secure new instructions. Identify opportunities to grow the Private Client practice in line with the firm's strategy.

Collaboration & Leadership



Share knowledge and best practice within the department and across the firm. Supervise, mentor, or support junior solicitors, paralegals, and trainees as required. Foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative working environment.

Professional Development



Keep up to date with developments in private client law, tax, and regulation. Take responsibility for your own continuing professional development (CPD), maintaining and recording competencies. Engage with training, webinars, and relevant courses to enhance your expertise.

About You



Qualified Solicitor with significant experience in Private Client law. STEP qualification (or working towards) is highly desirable. Ability to manage a broad caseload with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong technical knowledge and judgement. Solid understanding of inheritance tax planning, trusts, and complex estate administration. Knowledge of the SRA Code of Conduct, anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, GDPR, and other compliance requirements. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with clients. Commercial and financial awareness, including responsibility for matter profitability, billing, and fee income targets. IT proficiency, including the use of case management systems, digital dictation, Microsoft Office, and remote working tools. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, and manage competing demands. Business development skills, with a proactive approach to networking and client engagement.
