Salary: 33,366 - 37,035 per annum

Contract: Permanent




Hours: Full (37 hours per week) and Part-time (hours TBC) hours available (4 posts available)



Location: Hybrid/ Harrogate office base or hybrid/ Scarborough office base. If based at the Harrogate office, there will be an expectation to visit sites across the West of the county (Harrogate/ Richmond/ Northallerton/ Skipton / Selby locality areas) as required. If based at the Scarborough office, there will be an expectation to visit sites across the East of the county (Scarborough and Malton) as required.

We are looking for a Private Housing Standards Officer, who will protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our residents through raising housing standards and providing high quality support and advice to residents.


Our Service





The purpose of our Private Housing Standards Service is to improve housing standards ensuring all privately rented accommodation is well managed, properly maintained, safe and habitable. This is achieved by providing advice and guidance and where necessary by enforcing relevant legislation to deliver the Councils statutory Housing functions.


The Role





As our next Private Housing Standards Officer, you will be a critical member of the team, you will support the operational delivery of the Housing Standards Service by carrying out inspections, investigations and surveys, the preparation of notices, reports and consultations.


You will also:




Draft warning letters, notices, and schedules of work. Arrange for works to be undertaken in default as necessary Assist in the decision making in respect of the instigation of formal legal action with regards to the service of statutory notices, formal warnings, fixed penalty notices, civil penalty notices and prosecutions. Support the EHO's to collect, prepare and present admissible evidence for legal proceedings, including the preparation of statements and giving evidence in court and tribunals when required. Provide appropriate advice, guidance, and interpretation of relevant legislation in line with the professional service of the post, as required.

What you will bring





You will have knowledge and commitment to quality customer focussed services with good problem-solving skills and the ability to find innovative solutions, knowledge of local authority practices and procedures, understanding of how policies/procedures can be applied in practice to result in required outcomes, experience of partnership working with internal and external stakeholders. Track record of managing conflict and complaints informally and formally, understanding of traditional/non-traditional methods of construction and general property maintenance and understanding of current Building Regulations and Planning Requirements.
